We’ve had nothing but wet weather for weeks and rather unsurprisingly, the ground is set to be soft at Ascot for Champions Day. That can often lead to some unexpected results so we’ve selected four horses that will thrive in the conditions. These include a fascinating 14/1 shot that is set to take on Economics in the Champion Stakes. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Montassib announced himself as a quality sprinter when winning the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock last month. That form alone is enough to give him every chance but he’s unbeaten in three starts on soft ground. Conditions should surely suit him down to the ground and there will be no excuses.
Thunder Roll is available at massive odds, despite the fact that she was won two of her three starts on soft ground. Far from disgraced when fourth in the Prix de Royallieu, her two Listed wins on soft over 1m4f suggest she’s capable of outrunning her price.
Metropolitan is very lightly raced still and there could be more to come. Unbeaten in two starts on soft, that record includes victory in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains on just his fourth run. He had no answer to Charyn on good ground in the Jacques le Marois but slower conditions should close the gap significantly.
Iresine is 4/4 on soft ground so the conditions clearly won’t bother him. There’s always a chance he could be vulnerable to pacier sorts over this trip but you wouldn’t want to rule out a big run. Jean-Paul Gauvin’s seven-year-old did win the 2023 Prix Ganay however, suggesting he has enough pace to give a good account of himself.
