‘Conditions will be perfect’ – Three value horses to back on Champions Day

We’re deep into September now and we’re entering the final part of the Flat turf season. Although racing continues until November, the championships are decided on Champions Day at Ascot. We have a month to go so now is the perfect time to take an ante-post look at some of the big Group 1s. Liam Bramall has picked out three value bets to consider, two of which are available at double-figure prices. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes

It’s rare that we have fast ground due to the time of year so if it comes up soft, conditions will be perfect for David O’Meara’s Estrange (10/1, bet365). There’s chance she could go to the Arc instead but her trainer has expressed a desire to come here instead. That would be the sensible play as she would have a cracking chance on her best form. Only Minnie Hauk was too good for her in the Yorkshire Oaks and a big run could be on the cards if she lines up.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

Docklands (12/1, bet365) looks like a 90-rated handicapper a lot of them time but Ascot turns him into a Group 1 horse. Harry Eustace’s five-year-old produced a career best performance to win the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot in June and a reproduction of that form would surely give him every chance. It was a fair effort in the Jacques Le Marois last time and he has won on soft ground in the past.

Champion Stakes

Anmaat (7/1, bet365) won this race last year and he will also appreciate soft ground. Owen Burrows’ stable star has been the model of consistency in three starts so far this season, finishing second each time. He kept on well to close down Delacroix in the Irish Champion Stakes and a similar effort would put him bang in the mix once again.
