Champions combine! Patrick Mullins will ride for Paul Nicholls for the first time ever

Champion amateur rider Patrick Mullins has never had a ride for 14-time Champion trainer Paul Nicholls, but that is all set to change on Monday, at Plumpton of all places! Let’s take a look at this historic moment and assess the horse’s chances below.

1.20 Plumpton

Patrick Mullins will ride the Paul Nicholls-trained It’s A Breeze in the extended 2m4f amateur riders’ handicap hurdle, the second race on the card, and on all known form, Mullins might have his work cut out to get this horse into the winner’s enclosure.

The 6yo son of Walk In The Park has been well beaten in four starts to date, but perhaps now reverting to handicap company will bring out the required improvement. It will certainly need to!

Sent off favourite for a Wincanton bumper on rules debut at Wincanton in December 2023, he ran a very poor race, and then he finished a remote third behind a decent type on hurdle debut at the same track a year later.

Two poor efforts have followed since over hurdles, finishing sixth of 10 runners over 16.5f at Exeter, and he was last seen finishing stone last of the seven runners when upped to 2m4f at Ffos Las last April.

Clearly, he has had plenty of time since then to get his act together and an opening mark of 103 is workable enough when you consider the yard that he hails from.

It must be noted that backing this horse comes with big risks attached so it could pay to look at the market when considering his chances. If he starts to get backed, then he could be of interest.
