Paul Townend has an incredible 47 per cent strike-rate at Limerick Racecourse in the last five seasons, which is nearly a winner from every two rides, and it has to be of interest that the champion jockey travels to the Munster track for just one ride on the card on Tuesday afternoon! Let’s take a look at the horse in more detail.
Townend doesn’t visit Limerick all that often! In fact, he has only ridden there 15 times in the last five seasons and this will be his second ride of the season at the track. He must have a glorious opportunity aboard the Ricci-owned Laurets d’Estruval in the 2m maiden hurdle.
The five-year-old son of Saint Des Saints finished second in an extended 2m1f novice hurdle at Pau on heavy ground when trained in France and the winner has subsequently won six times, including twice at Listed level.
On his first start for Willie Mullins over this course and distance at Limerick’s Christmas meeting, he bumped into a well-backed local winner in the shape of Starting Fifteen who is a promising type for Eric McNamara, but he was well clear of the remaining 15 runners.
That was Laurets d’Estruval’s first run in over a year so he was more than entitled to need it, and given the Mullins camp also wasn’t in good form at the time, much better can be expected now, and conditions will be in his favour.
It’s also worth noting that he has multiple Grade 1 entries coming up at the Cheltenham Festival over a range of trips so it will be interesting to see what ability he possesses.
