Betfair Tingle Creek preview: Horse-by-horse guide and ante-post tips
Read on for Adrian Wall’s horse-by-horse guide and selection for Saturday’s Betfair Tingle Creek at Sandown.
Il Etait Temps (Willie Mullins)
He might be small in size but he is a very classy horse, proven when beating Jonbon easily in the Celebration Chase over C&D on his only start last season. He looked as good as ever when winning at Clonmel last month and enjoys underfoot conditions, so deserves to be at the head of the market.
L’Eau Du Sud (Dan Skelton)
Has progressed at a rate of knots over fences, landing the Henry VIII over C&D and was an excellent fourth in the Arkle last season when tying up late on. He made short work of Jonbon in the Shloer at Cheltenham on his return and with the Skeltons flying high, he has every chance again.
Jonbon (Nicky Henderson)
A top-class horse with 18 wins for his connections including the last two renewals of this contest and possibly a tad underestimated in the betting here. Nonetheless, he was beaten by Il Etait Temps here last April, and was battered by L’Eau Du Sud at Cheltenham last month at his unfavoured Cheltenham. He may well bounce back here with the run under his belt on a track he loves.
Libberty Hunter (Evan Williams)
Was running a huge race when falling three from home in the Champion Chase won by Marine Nationale last season and fell again in the Shloer last month. His jumping needs to improve to have any chance.
Edwardstone (Alan King)
Has strong form at Sandown, including a Henry VIII Novices’ win back in 2021 and this race in 2022, but he has been a shadow himself since a heavy fall in this race last year and was a distance behind L’Eau Du Sud in the Shloer at Cheltenham last month. The veteran is set to struggle again.
Boothill (Harry Fry)
Much prefers Ascot and hasn’t won for two years, while his jumping hasn’t stood up to the test in recent times either. Looks on the decline now and was pulled up on reappearance last month. Safe to rule out.
Verdict
The 9/2 about Jonbon could tempt many as a return to this track could see him return to form after a blowout last month. Il Etait Temps was visually impressive at Clonmel but hasn’t had a tough race in a while. That could leave the door open for Shloer winner L’Eau Du Sud to take down another big race over fences.
