Ben Pauling is unbeaten at Ascot this season and has two good chances on Friday

Ascot has been a happy hunting ground for Ben Pauling so far this season and he’s been selective and successful with his runners so far. The Gloucestershire-based trainer has sent two runners to the track and both managed to come out on top. That makes him one to watch on Friday and both of his runners have decent chances of getting the job done. With that in mind, we’re going to take a closer look at the two horses in question. 2.00 Ascot

Your Darling has been off the track for well over a year but he was progressing nicely in handicap chases before that. Pauling’s 10-year-old has made this race his own in recent years, winning two of the last three renewals, and that certainly bodes well for a big run. He won with plenty in hand at Uttoxeter when last seen and shouldn’t be too inconvenienced by a 5lb higher mark on that evidence. Fitness is a potential issue but he could be worth taking a chance with here.

3.10 Ascot

Awaythelad got off the mark over fences at Southwell last term and the form has been boosted by a couple of subsequent winners coming out of the race. The son of Getaway probably had more in hand than the margin suggests, as he idled a little up the run-in. You can put a line through his most recent effort, as the eight-year-old’s jumping let him down that day. He’s capable of producing better performances than that and the handicapper has dropped him 1lb since.
