Ayr Gold Cup preview: ‘It’s been a long time coming but this could be his day’

The highlight on a busy day of racing on Saturday across Britain and Ireland is the Ayr Gold Cup, where a field of 25 runners are set to go to post to land the valuable handicap. As ever, you can check out our free horse racing tips for the weekend on the website right now, where we currently have an accumulator, double, Lucky 15 and Nap of the day on the site.

Back to the big race in question and there’s one horse who sticks out like a sore thumb at the weights for the feature so let’s get cracking.

3.35 Ayr

He needs everything to drop right and will need some luck in running but with a clear run through, Rohaan is going to take all the beating. David Evans’ 6yo son of Mayson has gone nine starts without victory, his most recent win coming at Ascot last October off a mark of 102.

However, he’s now running off a mark of 96 and he was a big eyecatcher last time in an Ascot handicap, a race that didn’t suit him tactically. A small field of seven runners, he was sent off the 9/4 favourite but it was a slow run race and he got caught a bit further back than ideal, before finishing off really well over the 6f, beaten a length.

Rohaan was seventh in this race last year off an 8lb higher mark but he was an unlucky loser, beaten just over a length and badly hampered when trying to gain some ground. If the gaps appear for him off this mark, he’s going to take the world of beating.
