Aidan O’Brien can win the St Leger again but not with the horse everyone thinks

Aidan O’Brien has won the St Leger eight times and has come out on top in the last two renewals. The master of Ballydoyle trains eight of the 15 potential runners and Scandinavia heads the market. Dual-Derby winner Lambourn is also there but it’s a 12/1 shot who draws the eye. Very lightly raced, we haven’t seen the best of the horse in question yet and he’s definitely worth considering. St Leger (Saturday 13th September)

Stay True (12/1, bet365) is one of Galileo’s final crop and he retains a significant amount of potential. We didn’t see him as a two-year-old but he left a very good impression on debut at Leopardstown in April. Four subsequent winners have come out of the race and he won with plenty in hand.

Racing wide for much of the race at Lingfield next time, he probably didn’t get the ideal run and was only beaten a short head by stablemate Puppet Master. He ran on well and that was a nice performance on just his second start and a great trial for the St Leger.

We don’t know if it was due to a setback or through choice but he missed more than three months after that and can be forgiven for needing the run when a close-up fourth in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes last time out.

This horse has a similar profile to last year’s winner Jan Brueghel and there could be any amount of improvement still to come. It seems likely that we’ll get a small field this year and the 12/1 surely won’t be around forever, so now could be the time to get involved.
