12 out of the last 15!? Aidan O’Brien is the trainer to follow in the Beresford Stakes

Aidan O’Brien has a ridiculous 21 victories in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes and the 2024 renewal takes place on Saturday. No fewer than 12 of those have come in the last 15 years and he runs two in the race this year. Clearly he knows what it takes to win this race so we’ve assessed the chances of both runners below. Trinity College

The penny didn’t drop straight away for Trinity College and he was a little disappointing in his first couple of starts. It was a very different story at Galway last time out however and he was hugely impressive when getting off the mark. Scoring by 12 lengths that day, he was in a league of his own and clearly possesses a tonne of ability.

His pedigree is very eye-catching also, being by Dubawi and out of English and Irish 1000 Guineas winner Hermosa. His half-brother Igor Stravinsky also won as a two-year-old which is another positive sign. Another encouraging thing is the fact that he has improved with every start thus far and there could be more to come.

Lambourn

Lambourn has a very different profile as he’s unbeaten in two starts coming into this race. He looked beaten on debut at Killarney but picked up very well late on to get off the mark. This son of Australia is definitely going to want a trip next year but is clearly competitive over a mile for now.

Aidan O’Brien’s colt made the trip over for a Listed race at Craon in France next time and was slow to get going once again. Picking up fairly quickly after that, he was back on terms before long and was strong at the finish to score by three-quarters-of-a-length. Improvement will be needed but you wouldn’t want to rule him out.
