1000 Guineas Day: Big race preview, a French raider and a 20/1 outsider to follow
The fillies get there chance to shine in Sunday’s 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and it’s well set to be a cracking race. There’s an intriguing French raider amongst the field so we’ve had a look at her chances of taking the prize back across the Channel. We’ve also picked out an outsider at 20/1 who could outrun her odds at Newmarket and Andrew Balding sends one on a 780-mile round trip to Hamilton. Race of the day: 1000 Guineas
Precise heads the market for the first fillies Classic of the season and it’s very easy to see why. Aidan O’Brien’s filly is already a two-time Group 1 winner and she bolted up over course and distance in the Fillies’ Mile. There are very few negatives and if fit enough, she should win.
Karl Burke’s Venetian Sun also produced some excellent two-year-old form and is likely to be in the mix but she has a bit to find with Precise on the Moyglare form. True Love also represents Ballydoyle and she has a rock-solid chance, provided the trip isn’t beyond her.
Charlie Appleby won this last year and he runs the once-raced Abashiri. Andre Fabre’s My Highness is of interest and Rockfel runner-up The Prettiest Star is popular in the betting.
French raider alert
It’s not too often that Andre Fabre sends runners over to Britain and it would be even more unusual if he sent one over without a chance. My Highness was progressive last season, winning the Group 2 Prix du Calvados, but will need to improve on her seasonal reappearance last month.
Long distance traveller
Andrew Balding is a Hampshire-based trainer so it’s fair to say that Hamilton isn’t one of his local tracks. In fact, it’s a 780-mile round trip to the Scottish course and he sends one runner there on Sunday. The twice-raced Conclave was a winner on debut and finished second in a good race at Kempton after that.
ITV Outsider of the day
Miss Justice (20/1, bet365) was a neck away from winning a 1m2f Group 3 here in October and the four-year-old has won at Listed level in the past. That most recent performance suggests she has every chance, as it’s not the strongest Group 2, and Billy Loughnane takes the ride for Brian Meehan.
