3.25pm York Tips & Betting Preview 07/10/2016

As this has only been run the once we have no data to play with but all we will add it is that very few horses are bred for stamina these days and this mile and three quarters will take some getting in this three-year-olds only handicap. Newmarket trainer David Simcock has a decent chance of taking this event with West Coast Flyer (16/1 Each Way)  who has won his last two races and four of only seven career starts, suggesting there may still be room for further improvement. last time out at Chelmsford he stayed on strongly to win over this trip by half a length form Graceland and although put up another seven pounds we got the feeling Jamie Spencer may have hit the front a bit too soon that day and if he can be held up long enough he could well be produced to land his hat trick this afternoon..

Sussex trainer and ex jockey Gary Moore will be glad that the two early top weights came out of the race to allow his Guns Of Leros (5/1) to run without being out of the handicap. A son of Cape Blanco who cost 50,000 Guineas at the sales he has also won his last three races, all over a mile and a half and all in Class Four handicaps at Salisbury Goodwood and Epsom, and with the excellent Hector Crouch taking five pounds off his back again here and left on the same mark of 82 as before his last wide margin success he can also get involved though he does like to front run as do a few of these which makes tactics interesting.

Plenty of recent wins have shown anyone doubting the abilities of Brian Meehan that he still has what is needed and more, and he has an interesting outsider here with Calvinist (33/1) who won his maiden as a two-year-old over a mile and a quarter but has presumably had his issues with just the one start in 2016 when sixth of eight at Sandown over a mile and a quarter after being badly hampered and losing any chance he had. That was his first run in eleven months so it seems fair to assume he would have needed it for race fitness at least, while he also has stamina written all over him and ought to be a lot happier stepped up to this trip off what could end up being a very lenient handicap mark and with Jimmy Fortune booked to ride.

With the Roger Varian yard in good form again with the odd exception, the lightly raced Corinthian (7/1) comes in to the equation and could be a bit of a dark horse now. After winning first time out at Haydock he has finished second and fourth in his other two races, keeping on at one pace over this trip last time out and left on the same rating today. He could improve and take a hand but if not, he has place chances at least and is one to consider when putting together your shortlist for forecasts and the like.

Lastly for now and Andrew Balding remains in good form and he runs The Graduate (8/1) here as he looks for his fifth win in a busy season. He has certainly done things the hard way starting with a Class Six handicap at Salisbury, a Class Four at Sandown, a Class Three at Newbury and most recently a Class Two at Haydock. Interestingly he was at his most impressive last time in the toughest contest of them all winning by four and a half lengths and it will be interesting to see if an extra six pounds is enough to stop him.
