A top class sprint win by some very useful sorts in the past including Maarek, Mecca’s Angel and Steps in the last three years, so we know we are looking for a quality sprinter. Using that as a rule of thumb we almost have to start with Robert Cowell’s Goldream (20/1) who is top class at his best and can include a Prix de L’Abbaye win in Paris on his CV from October 2015 which was, coincidentally his last victory. Lightly raced since at the age of seven, he has finished third to Take Cover in the Group Two King George Stakes at Goodwood and was more recently a disappointing third to Just Glamorous at Chantilly but at his best he would win this with his head in his chest but yet again, the ground has gone against him and we prefer the chances of his stable companion.

With softer ground assured it’s all about Spirit Quartz (15/2 Each Way) as far as we are concerned and you can understand why when you look at his form. Although a six length eighth last time in the Group Two Flying Five Stakes at The Curragh last week his earlier form includes wins in Listed class on soft or worse ground at Cork and Tipperary and with plenty of his rivals potentially in big trouble on this ground he can run in to a place at the very least and at a decent price.

Ridge Ranger (7/2) is another who won’t mind underfoot conditions and he has already won a Group Three this season when beating Besharah at York in the Summer Stakes. That was clearly no fluke as he has since finished runner up to Mehronissa in a Listed race at Pontefract and in a decimated field, he has to have as good a chance as any though heavy going may yet be his undoing.

Charlie Hills has some decent sprinters in his care and knows what is needed to win a race like this and will be hoping for a big run from Cotai Glory (5/1). Once again, he has plenty to find with some of these on recent runnings but the sprinters seem to almost take turns with luck in running and a smart break for the stalls so important over the minimum trip, and on a good day he could run in to a place at a decent price for each way punters here.

To round things off Alpha Delphini (6/1) I will need a career best to get involved here but arrives at the very top of his game after three wins in a row at York Ascot and Beverley. The nest of them was ”only” a Listed race so he needs to find a lot more to get involved but when they are winning they can be hard to stop, and who is to say he can’t improve a few pounds more to take a hand in one of the races of the day?
