Some of the “stuck in the muds” might not like it but the fact is, all-weather racing is getting better and better year on year (not all races, but some), and two Listed events on a Thursday afternoon Lingfield card is evidence to back up that sweeping statement. Even at the four day stage only one of the runner has a distance win against their name ahead of this stamina test for the ladies and that is the Roger Varian trained Tingleo (28/1) who took a Class Five handicap here two races ago off a mark of 69 before bombing out big style next time out in a Class Four off a rating six pounds higher. Fifty lengths last that day, surely her form there was too bad to be true, or perhaps it was the other way round and her victory was the fluke – after all, it was her first win at the seventh attempt and it may be financial folly to read that to literally.

On official ratings the Hughie Morrison trained Sweeping Up (9/2) is the best horse in the race with a mark of 101, but she is another who seems happier placing than winning with four runners up spots from her twelve career starts, though to be fair losing to Jack Hobbs in a Group Three at Kempton is no disgrace.  She is clearly a pretty decent sort but looks fully exposed after twelve career and we wonder if something lighter rated may be able to improve past her today.

John Gosden has already had a season to remember and still has Golden Horn’s USA swan song to go, but he also looks after a nice filly in California (3/1) who won her first two races at Wetherby and Doncaster before a running on seventh at Chantilly over ten furlongs. As a daughter of Azamour we cannot imagine why they even entered her over this far as her breeding screams a lack of stamina, but they know better than us how she works at home and if they thinks she will get home who are we to argue.

Godolphin are having yet another in and out season, though with better results than in some years to be fair, and if they can get Desert Snow (7/2) back to her best she would have a very good chance of success. Her three career wins have all been on the all-weather, two and Kempton and one at Wolverhampton, and have been over as far as two miles so this trip is a shoe in for the daughter of Teofilo, and as she has already won a Class two handicap and run well in Listed class she has every opportunity of adding those wins this Thursday afternoon.

Lastly, we are big fans of the genius that is Sir Mark Prescott and he sends Alwilda (11/1) here after her recent win at Cologne over a marathon two miles and three furlongs. This trip should be like a sprint in her eyes after taking that, and on soft ground as well, but whether she has the pace to deal with some of these is another question entirely. She will be running on when others have had enough (obviously) and is in form hence a mention, but we suspect others may handle the distance a little better though she could well place at a decent price.
