IN SUMMARY: With Venturous and Lathom now declared non-runners, preference is for former Listed-class performer Willytheconqueror bouncing back to form now that he is dropped into Class 3 handicap company. William Muir’s 4-year-old hasn’t been at his best this season, but he is very well handicapped if he can find the spark again and there is every chance that he can do exactly that today.
1 WILLYTHECONQUEROR – A very smart horse at his best who has been given a chance by the handicapper after a couple of rather poor runs. Much better than a mark of 94 if putting his best foot forward, has some solid form on soft ground and can’t be dismissed.
2 SMOKEY LANE – Was put up 7lbs for an easy win in May at this very course and has since slipped back down the weights to that same mark. Has changed trainers since but clearly has the ability to go in off this mark with cut in the ground and must be shortlisted.
3 SOIE D’LEAU – A bit of a mudlark who ran a massive race from the front when just failing to last home on bottomless ground at Haydock last time out. Has won twice off higher marks than he is currently on and is obviously in good form; sound chance.
4 UNION ROSE – Has not been running badly since landing a Bath handicap off 83 and has been dropped a few pounds for his last couple of runs. He won’t mind the ground but doesn’t look particularly well handicapped and you’d think he’d find one or two too good.
5 ISEEMIST – Has been a bit disappointing since a one and a half length defeat by the very talented Kimberella at Lingfield but that is reflected in her tumbling handicap mark. There is a big question mark over the ground though as she has never won on it; one of the less likely winners.
6 SIGNORE PICCOLO – Below par in his last two runs after a very respectable run off a mark a few pounds higher than this but he certainly doesn’t look thrown in and although he handles the ground he doesn’t jump off the page.
9 SOMEWHERE SECRET -Won what looked a pretty competitive race at Doncaster last time out but the handicapper has not gone easy on him and he won’t find it easy off a seven pound higher mark. Quite lightly raced but will need to improve a fair amount to take this.
7 VENTUROUS – Looked a very smart prospect at one point in his career and despite not really living up to his potential he remains a talented horse. Ran a huge race last time when missing the kick a mile at Doncaster. big chance if he breaks on terms here for an in-form yard.
8 LATHOM – Doesn’t mind it soft as he proved when a very close fourth just two starts ago. He has been on a very long losing run since picking up two wins in 2015 but doesn’t look badly handicapped here and has recently moved yards, of definite interest.
