IN SUMMARY: Not an easy race to call with plenty more than capable of winning this at their best but that was a few years back and there is no guarantee they can repeat that here. MODEM holds all the aces on the formbook having finished second to Diplomat last time out with Swansea Mile, All The Way Jose, Mr Hot Stuff, and Casino Markets in behind. If he can repeat that run here he ought to land the odds and come home in front for trainer Elizabeth Voss.

1 ALL THE WAY JOSE – Jonathan Shepherd is the King of American trainers when it comes to the jumps and he has entered this seven-year-old son of Senor Swinger in a bid to take this prize. Last time out he raced over two miles three furlongs at Saratoga in late August when a good third to Diplomat and Modem, and he meets the runner-up on two pounds better terms for a length and three-quarters suggesting there will be very little between the two of them. He seems sure to run well and gets plenty of weight from the main protagonists.

2 SWANSEA MILE – Four wins from twenty-one starts for the Richard Hendriks trained seven-year-old who used to be in the care of Ted Walsh in Ireland and then Dan Skelton and he has victories to his name at Bellewstown, Killarney, and Kempton before his latest win at Saratoga in July over fences. Last time out he finished fifth to Diplomat when three and a quarter lengths behind Modem and a length and a half behind All The Way Jose and fifteen and three-quarter lengths in front of Casino Markets and although her does race on slightly better terms here he looks up against it on paper at least.

3 CHARMINSTER – If Swansea Mile is held by Modem then so is Charminster who finished seventeen lengths behind Swansea Mile at Saratoga last time out though in his defence that was over fences and he reverts back to hurdles this evening. A winner at Haydock, Sedgefield, Musselburgh, and Warwick when trained by Donald McCain he can’t be getting any better at the age of eleven but it still gives us a chance to see an old friend in action.

4 SIMENON – Formerly in the care of Andrew Balding in Lambourn and then Willie Mullins in Ireland, the ten-year-old son of Marju won four races on the flat and five more over hurdles before heading over the Atlantic to be trained by Richard Hendriks. After being pulled up behind Swansea Mile over fences, blinkers have been added for the first time this evening and if they can get him back to anything like his peak (which seems unlikely), then he would be a major contender here and was perhaps the best of these at his peak with a return to hurdling expected to see plenty of improvement.

5 HINTERLAND – Paul Nicholls used to handle the son of Poliglote whose career highlight was a superb third to stable companion Dodging Bullets in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown in December 2014. Not quite as good over hurdles he was last seen finishing second to Scorpiancer at Percy Warner Park beaten sixteen lengths over three miles but his earlier second to Bob Le Beau here over course and distance gives him a solid chance in this field and he should run a big race tonight under jockey Sean McDermott.

6 MR. HOT STUFF – Lightly raced in comparison to the majority of this field but he still looks outclassed in this line up based on his recent efforts. A fifteen length seventh to Diplomat (and behind Modem, All The Way Jose, and Swansea Mile) leaves him with a lot to find on the formbook, and with his last win in 2013 over shorter than this trip (and with the legendary Hunt Ball back in sixth), he looks up against it and seems sure to be running for the bookmakers here.

7 CASINO MARKETS – Leighton Aspell is out in New York to ride Emma Lavelle’s nine-year-old who we would love to suggest as a bet being from these shores, but sadly he does look to have plenty to find. He ran in the same race at Saratoga as many of these last time out and has nineteen lengths to find with Modem on six pounds worse terms and has it all to do to make that up even at these revised weights. It may be worth adding that was his first run Stateside and he may have needed longer than expected to settle in to his new surroundings but this still looks beyond him though he ought to do better for the experience.

8 MODEM – Still only a youngster at the age of seven, he used to be trained by Jessica Harrington in Ireland but was sold straight after winning a Beginners Chase at Ballinrobe in May and has had two runs since with a second to Swansea Mile over fences at Saratoga and a second to diplomat at the same track over hurdles last time out. He holds half this field on that run and although worse off at the weights would be expected to confirm the placings this evening for new trainer Elizabeth Voss and jockey Jack Doyle.
