A busy Bank Holiday Monday kicks off with a mile and a half handicap at Southwell. Out expert tip and runner by runner preview for the contest is below.

IN SUMMARY: BEACH PARTY is the most interesting of these after just three runs to gain a handicap mark. Her half brother was a winner on the Fibresand surface so she promises to act on it, with plenty of improvement in the tank. Les Pecheurs, Star Ascending and Go On Gal are all horses who have enough about their form to suggest they have an each way chance, the latter pair especially have plenty of placed form on this track and should give backers a solid run for their money.

1 FAST PLAY – Better on the all weather than turf, but she is yet to try Fibresand. Her sire has thrown a couple of winners on the surface from only limited runners so there is hope that she will act on it for a local yard who have a better strike rate here than any other all weather track. She needs to up her game considerably on recent evidence but is too well handicapped to completely ignore.

2 LEAN ON PETE – A winner from a pound lower at Beverley earlier in the season, he has struggled to get close to that level since. He has plenty of form on this surface and at this trip so there are no concerns there, but his lack of recent solid efforts is slightly off-putting.

3 GUNNER MOYNE – All three wins have come on artificial surfaces, including on this track in April. All wins have been over a mile however, the once he tried this trip in the past, he didn’t look a natural stayer. Blinkers replace his usual visor, the one time he wore them in the past was not one of his better efforts so he has plenty to prove.

4 THOU SWELL – Sprung a 25/1 shock over this course and distance in February, winning a selling handicap at 25/1. The first time visor he wore on that occasion contributed to that improved effort but he has only come close to that form once in seven starts since. Looks a risky proposition once more.

5 MOOJANED – Just 1/15 on the all weather, but that did at least come at this track. He has been a bit of a mixed bag on the turf since joining the John Flint yard but has shown enough to suggest that he will be competitive at this level if on a going day, holds an each way chance.

6 STAR ASCENDING – Placed four times from seven visits to this track, those efforts all came from higher up the handicap than he finds himself now. He has struggled for form since winning at Wolverhampton in April from a two pound higher mark but is now dangerously well handicapped. May only add another place to his course record but is well worth considering from an each way point of view.

7 PADDLEYOUROWNCANOE – A winner at this track over a mile in March, he never looked happy when running over this trip here the next time, turned over as the 11/10 favourite. He has been campaigned at longer trips recently to a modicum of success. Looks a little high up the handicap to win but he has a place chance on his recent efforts.

8 GO ON GAL – Placed on all three of her starts over this course and distance but she is yet to get her head in front. She is seven pounds lower than the last of those placed efforts so she is in with a chance of adding to that record in an open race, but given her overall record, she’s tough to back as a potential winner.

9 COCKNEY BOY – Just a single good run from eleven career starts, on very quick ground at Bath. That wouldn’t be a natural ground surface to consider Fibresand suiting on his first run on it and the first time cheekpieces are going to have to improve him massively.

10 ALBERT BOY – This is his trip but he is yet to look like a natural on the all weather. Six runs here have resulted in nothing better than an eight length fourth so he is relatively easy to dismiss from calculations.

11 LES PECHEURS – Has shown the odd glimmer of promise on her turf efforts so far. She is readily excused her latest run at Hamilton as it probably came too quick after a solid enough handicap debut at Beverley. This is her debut on an artificial surface but her sire has thrown a few Fibresand winners, is at least unexposed and open to more improvement than the majority of this field.

12 BEACH PARTY – Has had just the three runs to qualify for a mark, she represents the Hughie Morrison team who are always a yard to take note of on handicap debut. She has run on Polytrack but not Fibresand. Her half brother Pirate’s Treasure is 2/2 on the surface here at Southwell so that’s a huge positive towards her taking to it. Looks one to be obviously interested in given her profile.

13 ARCADIAN SEA – Has finished third in three of this four handicaps to date, including last time at Thirsk. He is yet to try this surface which is a slight negative but he is steadily progressing at this sort of level so he looks one of many who have each way claims on this contest.

14 MUNGO MADNESS – 0/10 in his career, showing very little to work on in nine of those ten runs. On the other he was only a length and a half behind (the now 88 rated) Winston C at Yarmouth but he has failed to get within twenty pounds of that since and is easily opposed.
