8.05pm Ripon Tips & Betting Preview 07/06/2017

This is a Class 3 handicap over six furlongs, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.

IN SUMMARY: This is an open handicap and it might be worth taking a chance on the returning ATLETICO. He 5 year old hasn’t been seen in nearly two years but it’s interesting that connections have persisted with him and he could remain well-treated off 88. Scrutineer would be of interest if sufficient rain arrived whilst Zanetto is likely to be popular on the back of a win last time out, although the handicapper has duly punished him for it.

1 SCRUTINEER – 3lb lower than his last winning mark which came in a Class 2 handicap on Heavy ground last year. He’s been comfortably held on three starts this season but he’s dropped in grade today and wasn’t beaten far in a Listed contest at Doncaster in April so there are plenty of positives about him today. Silvestre De Sousa is on board and a big run is expected although he’ll need the ground to soften up.

2 PIPERS NOTE – The Ruth Carr stable is in fair form of late and their runner is not without a chance in this. He’s been running to a consistent level this season which included a placed effort in a Listed contest at Doncaster on Good to Soft ground and he’s generally thereabouts although his best form has come over the minimum trip even though he’s a winner at six furlongs. Others make slightly more appeal at the weights.

3 SHARED EQUITY – Without a win since October 2015 off a one pound higher mark and he’s a slightly inconsistent sort who has found Class 2 handicaps on the tough side. He’s dropped in grade today which could spark a revival in form although he’s another that would prefer slightly softer ground. The stable isn’t in the finest of form at present and it may pay to look elsewhere.

4 REFLEKTOR – Lightly-raced sort who won a similar contest to this last spring over 5 furlongs on Soft ground. That came off a 9lb lower mark and he’s struggled in better company and it was no surprise to see him dropped in grade on his seasonal reappearance. He will improve for that run and he should be capable in this grade with the benefit of fitness and Tom Dascombe’s runner could be dangerous here.

5 JORDAN SPORT – Recorded a double on the All-Weather over 6 furlongs and he remains on a career high mark today following a fair fourth of ten last time out in a similar contest to this. That came two days ago and he’s turned out quickly here so connections clearly feel he’s on a fair mark and this is a good enough opportunity. He’ll need to do more to win this and he’s worth opposing today for a stable operating at a 9% strike rate at present.

6 ZANETTO – Arrives here on the back of a win off a 6lb higher mark following a win in a Class 4 handicap in April. He took advantage of a falling mark that day and he evidently retains some of his ability although this requires more from him today now back up in grade and it may pay to look elsewhere. The yard has been operating at a 6% strike rate in the past fortnight.

7 SNAP SHOTS – Makes his third start today for Tony Coyle and he should improve from his seasonal reappearance in a Class 2 handicap at York last month. He’s down 2lbs today which will certainly help and he’s one pound lower than his last winning mark so there’s every chance this C&D winner could bounce back to form today. The stable have sent out just one winner from their last 16 runners in the past fortnight.

8 ATLETICO – Lightly-raced 5yo who makes just his sixth career start today. He was gelded over the winter and arrives here off a nice mark having finished second of ten, beaten 2 lengths in a Class 3 Newmarket handicap back in August 2015. He’s clearly had some issues and may just need this run but he’s remained in training with Roger Varian and the market should guide best. One of close interest.

9 ECCLESTON – Without a win since August 2015 but he’s another to run to a consistent level over the past 18 months which did include a fourth placed finish in the Silver Cup at Ayr last September. He’s down a pound today following a 6-length defeat last time out and he’s falling to a more workable mark although he does need to find some improvement to get the better of these. Enters calculations today.

10 FLYING PURSUIT – Wasn’t beaten all that far at York in a better race than this last month and he’s been dropped a pound following that effort. He remains 2lbs higher than his last winning mark although he has placed off better marks than this and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him go close although the stable has a poor 8% strike rate at Ripon. Market support would make him of interest and he deserves respect today.

11 ZYLAN – Jumped 8lbs in the handicap following a 1 1/4 length success in a Class 4 contest in May and it was disappointing that he couldn’t follow that up at Thirsk. The ground may have gone against him that day given it was Soft and he should do better now returned to a sounder surface and kept over 6 furlongs. He has something to prove off this mark and it’s no surprise to see a 7lb claimer used today.

12 ANOTHER WISE KID – Ran a fine race at Doncaster in early April when he finished ninth of 22, beaten 3 1/2 lengths in a more competitive contest than this. He’s 3lbs lower today following a last-placed finish last time out in a tougher grade and he arrives here out of form and without a win since September 2015. The ground doesn’t look ideal for him and others are far more reliable in this for a yard without a winner from their last 22 runners.

13 JOHNNY CAVAGIN – Will love this good ground following 4 wins from 15 starts on the surface. He ran a huge race last time out to finish second of fourteen on Heavy ground and it’s no surprise to see him raised 2lbs following that effort. He’s been consistent this campaign and he should run well again although he has gone up in the weights without a winning which is never ideal.

14 KENNY THE CAPTAIN – Won a Class 3 handicap at Newcastle on the All-Weather last season but he’s failed to follow up that form and he’s slipped 7lbs down the weights as a result. He won off this mark on the turf last season, albeit in a much weaker contest and he may be up against it again today against this decent opposition. Another one that may pay to oppose in this.
