This is a Class 6 handicap raced over 1m 6f, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.
IN SUMMARY: Mick Channon’s HALDAW may provide some value in this tricky event having struggled on Soft ground in her most recent starts. She showed promise on this surface earlier in the season and she could be sat on a nice mark today. Sheriff Garrett sets the standard on his win over C&D two starts ago but he’s paid for that success in the weights.
SHERIFF GARRETT – Has been improved for the application of cheekpieces which saw him win a Class 6 handicap over this C&D last month. He went close at Thirsk last week when attempting the double and he bumped into one that day, finishing second having been sent off the 100/30 favourite. He’s likely to be popular again today and he should go well in conditions that will clearly suit off the same mark.
DELANNOY – Drops down in grade today following some moderate performances over 1m 2f in Class 5 handicaps on his last few starts. This step up in trip can certainly bring some improvement out in him and a 2lb lower mark could let him in lightly today. Respected with Josephine Gordon taking over in the saddle now he races in a Class 6 handicap for the first time.
PADLEYOUROWNCANOE – Finished second to Sheriff Garrett when the pair met over C&D last month and he’s weighted to get much closer today. He probably has a bit to find with that rival, even on these revised terms and he should strip fitter today following a recent run over hurdles at Uttoxeter. Needs to do more today, although Dane O’Neill is a positive booking. The yard have failed to send out a winner from their last 14 runners.
MAGIC BEANS – Six race maiden who needs to do more today off a 2lb lower mark to get involved. He was beaten seven lengths at Sandown last time out over today’s trip and this represents an easier task so he’s not without a chance. The cheekpieces are left off again today and he has to enter calculations for a yard that does well with these sorts. The market should guide best.
EASY WIND – Sir Mark Prescott’s runner is tried in first-time cheekpieces today following a 1 1/4 length second at Chepstow last time out. He bumped into one that day when well supported and he’s been raised 2lbs which should leave him with another chance today. The slight drop back in trip is a positive move and he should be well up to winning a race of this nature. Respected.
HALDAW – Needs to bounce back to form following some poor runs this season. She had shown some ability in a Wolverhampton maiden back in April but she’s gone backwards since, although the ground may have been a ready excuse for those performances. She could provide some value in this with the switch back to the All Weather and she could be well weighted if bouncing right back to form.
LULU THE ROCKET – Races for the John Butler stable for the first time today following some mixed performances for Peter Chapple-Hyam. There were signs of promise on her latest run at Chelmsford and she is a pound lower today so it’s entirely possible that she improves again. She may just need this run given she’s been off the track for six months, but she’s worth watching in the betting. Support would be extremely significant.
BRETON BELLE – Makes her handicap debut today following three seventh placed efforts. She’s been beaten no less than a combined total of 79 lengths in three maiden runs and it’s tricky to know what to expect off a mark of 54 today. She steps up in trip again which looks positive and she is by Nathaniel so she should have some ability. Another worth watching in the betting.
NETLEY ABBEY – The yard have a poor 8% strike rate at the track and that doesn’t look set to improve today. Their runner is an eight race maiden who has failed to place on all starts, both on the turf and the All Weather. He was a long way behind Sheriff Garrett and Paddleyourowncanoe when they met at Wolverhampton last time out and he’s likely to finish in behind those rivals again today.
BED OF DIAMONDS – Six race maiden who arrives here with no form at all. She was tailed off last time out over 1m 6f at Lingfield and she looks rather backwards so it’ll be a big surprise to see her up there today. The yard have failed to send out a winner from four runners at Wolverhampton and they have had just one runner in the past fortnight.
SHADOW OF HERCULES – Connections have tried him in various bits of headgear already to no avail and he’s not improving at all having raced seven times to date, failing to place on any occasion. He’s left in a visor today but he’s going to need some major improvement to get anywhere near and he can only be watched.
VOLTURNUS – First time in a handicap today off an incredibly low mark of 46. He was beaten 77, 49 and 34 lengths respectively in three starts to date, although he is surely better than he has shown. Blinkers are applied for the first time today and Franny Norton is booked to ride so a better performance is expected. Worth a second look in the betting.
