This is a Class 5 handicap over a mile, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.
IN SUMMARY: A few of these are out of form of late and it looks prudent to stick with the in-form DYNA MIGHT. She remains well-treated having finished second off a 5lb higher mark last time out and she’s sure to go up again in the weights so she can exploit this useful mark. Her biggest danger looks to be Navajo Thunder who also looks well-treated on today’s terms and she will continue to improve now sent handicapping.
PENNERLEY – First run for the Micky Hammond stable today following some modest efforts with James Eustace as a 3yo. She finished fifth of twelve, beaten 3 3/4 lengths at Salisbury in October last year and she’s been nudged down a pound following that run and the booking of Paul Hanagan catches the eye today. The yard has a poor 3% strike rate at Thirsk and she may be up against it against some race fit rivals in this.
LADY TURPIN – Won a Southwell handicap in March by 2 1/4 lengths and she’s 5lbs higher following that success now racing back on the turf. This is a career high mark and a step up in grade on anything she has faced on the All-Weather this winter although the ground and trip should be fine for her. The yard have an 18% strike rate here and they use a 7lb claimer to aid her chances in this.
FILLYDELPHIA – Has run well without getting her head in front this season and she’s back down a pound following a heavy defeat at Musselburgh last month. She placed off this mark on her seasonal reappearance and she should be seen to better effect here with regular rider Paula Muir claiming 7lbs again. The stable are without a winner from their last 12 runners and others make more appeal.
CADMIUM – Without victory since a neck success at Hamilton back in July 2015 and she makes her seasonal reappearance today. She races off a mark of 53 which is her lowest rating for a long time and this grade may find her out again given she’s likely to need a run off a 216-day break. Lauren Steade claims 7lbs off her back and it would be a surprise to see her home in front today now stepped up in trip.
MRS BIGGS – Connections have tried her over middle-distances this season and they recorded a decent success at Wetherby last month which saw her win off a 3lb lower mark by a length. She couldn’t follow that up at Musselburgh next time out although she wasn’t beaten all that far and she’s clearly improving for this new distance. She looks up against it on these terms today though now upped in grade.
DUKE’S GIRL – Technically well-in on today’s terms with her weight-for-age allowance and her best effort came last time out in a Class 4 Salisbury handicap. She’s stepped up in trip again today and dropped in grade so there’s every chance she improves again and she should go close for a yard that have a 15% strike rate in the past fortnight. She’s likely to improve and could be dangerous here.
SPIRIT OF ROME – Finished 3 3/4 lengths behind Dyna Might last time out at Beverley in a weak handicap. She’s been dropped a pound for that effort and she needs to do more having flattered to deceive in a couple of handicaps already. This trip looks right for her although whether she wants the ground this fast is questionable. Hollie Doyle claims a useful 3lbs but others make more appeal.
NAVAJO THUNDER – Showed clear improvement for her first start in handicap company at Pontefract late last month to finish 3 1/4 lengths behind the winner. She had been beaten long distances previous to that in handicaps and she’s down another pound today and she could be on a nice weight. Market support would be significant and she’s one to watch closely now stepped up in trip again today.
DYNA MIGHT – Has hit some form since stepped up in trip and she has shown clear improvement for the application of cheekpieces. She couldn’t follow up her first success last time out having been beaten half a length but she’s on the same mark here and will be rated higher than this in future. This is a tougher assessment than her last two races but she should go well again off a featherweight.
