This is a Class 6 handicap over a mile and four furlongs, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.
IN SUMMARY: This is a poor handicap over a mile and a half and a chance is taken on BREAKWATER BAY. He drops down in grade today having been held in two better handicaps than this on the last two occasions but he’s stepped up in trip today and he can exploit a weak Class 6 race. Amadeus Rox makes some appeal with his seasonal return behind him having shaped with some promise whilst Diamante is worth close attention in the betting now stepped up in trip on handicap debut.
BREAKWATER BAY – Steps up in trip today to a mile and a half following two fifth placed efforts at Redcar in Class 5 handicaps. He’s slipped down to a mark of 60 which means he enters Class 6 company for the first time today and he’s still lightly-raced so there could be more to come from him today and he’s worthy of close attention in the betting. Respected.
SPIRIT OF ROME – Has shown mixed form in Class 6 handicaps over today’s trip. She was only beaten 2 lengths off a 2lb lower mark on her handicap debut but she has gone backwards since having moved up the weights and she finished last of 5, beaten 6 lengths last time out. She’ll be seen to better effect in this weaker grade but she doesn’t look to have a huge amount in hand on today’s terms.
TOO MANY SHOTS – Raised one pound following a 1 3/4 defeat at Lingfield last month over this trip. He beat Amadeus Rox that day by a neck but he was unable to catch a runaway winner having failed to quicken again when asked. There will be little between the pair again here and he will be seen to better effect with a strong pace to aim at for a yard that has sent out one winner from 12 runners in the past fortnight.
AMADEUS ROX – Lightly-raced son of Falco who has raced just four times to date. He should improve from his seasonal reappearance and the yard do well with their flat handicappers so there’s every reason to believe he should improve for that run last month. There will be little between him and Too Many Shots again but he may just get the better of that rival today with the benefit of that run under his belt off a break. He is of interest here.
SILVER GLEAM – Well-beaten in all five career starts and she was last seen finishing last of 8, beaten 13 1/2 lengths at Newcastle in November over a mile. She’s stepped up in trip today which doesn’t inspire much confidence off this long break although she is down 7lbs in the weights and Jason Hart is a positive booking. She’s best watched in this given she’s more than likely to need the run although market support would make her of interest.
DIAMANTE – Beaten 16, 11 and 15 lengths on three career starts in maiden company. She’s stepped up in trip today which is a positive move given she’s by Big Bad Bob and she is worth extremely close attention in the betting with a 49-day break likely to have been used to freshen her up for a turf campaign. The stable have been quiet of late but they’re more than capable of scoring in this grade and she’s of interest here.
NAVAJO STAR – Dropped another 2lbs following a 13-length defeat at Nottingham last month and there are very few signs that she’s about to improve following heavy defeats in all five career starts. Ben Curtis rides her for the first time today which looks positive and she’s another that’s stepped up in trip so she’s worth market attention although her overall profile gives little in the way of inspiration. The stable are operating at a 13% strike rate in the past fortnight.
NOTHING COMPARES – Showed a glimpse of promise at Kempton in early January when fourth of seven, beaten just 4 lengths over a mile and a half. She’s gone badly backwards since and she’s now 11lbs lower than when making her handicap debut and she’s been tried over further than this which failed to bring out any improvement. Mark Johnston doesn’t have many runners rated as low as this but she’s difficult to fancy here.
DYNA MIGHT – Ollie Pears has a fair record at Beverley (11 winners from 97 runners) and his Foxwedge filly is tried in first time cheekpieces today. She is likely to have needed her seasonal reappearance on the sand last month but she was only beaten 3 1/2 lengths off this mark back in October and she’s likely to run a much better race today so she enters calculations here from stall 2.
MOUNT CLESHAR – Handicap debut today off a mark of 48. He was beaten 13, 23 and 38 lengths on his last three starts and it’s extremely difficult to make a case for him in this although the step up in trip is likely to bring about improvement as is the switch to handicap company. On all known form he’s without a chance but the yard are shrewd with these types and he needs critical attention in the betting.
BABALUGATS – Wasn’t beaten far over 7 furlongs at Carlisle last summer on Good to Soft ground but she’s struggled on this faster ground on two occasions since which is a concern. She’s another that is likely to have needed her seasonal reappearance and the handicapper has dropped her 4lbs following that run so she may be able to put in a better showing here. The yard have a 9% strike rate from 280 runners at Beverley.
STAG PARTY – Achieved very little in 7 runs for Andrew Balding and he’s since transferred to Julia Brooke. He’s been beaten a fair margin in two All-Weather handicaps over a mile and slightly further and he is up again in trip today. He’s now racing off a career low mark but that’s still not enough to inspire confidence and he’s opposed here in first time cheekpieces.
