5.10pm Chelmsford Tips & Betting Preview 13/04/2017

This is a one mile contest, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.

IN SUMMARY: A few lovely sorts in this and SON OF THE STARS deserves a chance to follow up a promising debut. He won by a comfortable margin and he should progress plenty for just his second career start with Ryan Moore booked to ride. Drochaid offers some of the most solid form in this and should give his running whilst Prosper is an interesting filly making her handicap debut.

1 SON OF THE STARS – Decent maiden winner last December when he ran out a comfortable 3 1/4 length victor of a Class 5 maiden. The handicapper has allotted him an opening mark of 81 which looks fair based on that performance and the booking of Ryan Moore (39% strike rate here) looks extremely positive. Stall 3 is perfect and he has a big chance of following up that maiden success.

2 ILLAUNMORE – Three career starts to date which includes a victory over a mile at Kempton back in October of last year. She struggled badly in a Listed contest on her subsequent start but this is much easier and the handicapper has left her on a mark of 80. John Gosden hasn’t been in his usual sparkling form and others make slightly more appeal today although she certainly can’t be written off.

3 RAY’S THE MONEY – Broke his maiden on the fifth attempt when running out a decent winner in a 3-runner maiden. He beat Bonnie Gals by 2 1/2 lengths which is average form in itself but the handicapper has left him on a mark of 79 which looks stiff enough. Should enjoy the step up in trip to a mile but others make more appeal at the weights in this. Yard have a 10% strike rate here.

4 PROSPER – Surprise winner of a Kempton maiden back in November. She was sent off 20/1 that day and won by 1/2 a half against some okay-looking sorts who haven’t raced since. The form isn’t that conclusive so it’ll be interesting to see how she fares off a mark of 78 against the colts here. Plenty of progression to come for a yard operating at a 57% strike rate currently. Interesting.

5 DROCHAID – 40,000GNS purchase and he won a maiden at Haydock back in August of last year. He made a good return to action at Chelmsford just a week ago when running out a 1 1/4 length second behind a nice sort. That form gives him a chance here off this mark and the yard have a healthy 15% strike rate here. Exposed to the lightly-raced sorts but he offers a solid level of form.

6 JUMPING JACK – Decent enough sort for this yard last year when running out a winner on two occasions off marks of 56 and 64. He’s run with credit since off marks in the 70’s and is down 1lb for a 5 1/4 length defeat last time out over an extended mile. Trip should be fine today but he still looks high enough in the weights and others are preferred in this for a yard slightly out of form with just one winner from their last 12 runners.

7 MASONIC – Robyn Brisland is a profitable trainer here at Chelmsford (£55.00 profit to level stakes) and he returned to action back in February off a seasonal break with a below par run. Something may have been amiss that day and he didn’t give his true running so it’ll be interesting how he shapes here. He remains on a mark of 72 and others make slightly more appeal.

8 SEAVIEW – 68-rated filly who’s been in fine form this year with a win and two seconds to her name. She stepped up to a mile last time out and was only beaten a short head so she should be capable of getting involved off a 2lb higher mark. This is tougher than any race she’s faced this year and she should do well again on just her eighth start. Respected.
