This is a Class 4 handicap raced over 3m, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.
IN SUMMARY: This race may look competitive on the face of it, but there are a few badly handicapped runners in this and horses on the downgrade. WASHED ASHORE certainly isn’t one of them making his 11th career start today off a lowly mark and he can take advantage of a modest bunch and go on to better things. Gold Ignot could be dangerous if given an easy lead having made all to win just a couple of starts ago.
BENENDEN – Has failed to complete on his last two starts over hurdles, finishing pulled up on his last start. He has run well at Market Rasen before and he did win a Class 4 handicap hurdle contest on Soft ground so conditions should be fine. However, he’s only won twice from 18 starts and he’s vulnerable again today with some better weighted rivals in opposition.
STRUMBLE HEAD – Landed his first success of this campaign when winning a 5-runner 3m 2f chase at Newton Abbot last time out. He’s been raised 7lbs for that success which could end his chances today given he’s aged 12 and he’s not likely to find much improvement back down in trip. The yard have been flying of late with 6 winners from their last 20 runners.
DAWNIERIVER – Was well-supported when winning a Class 4 handicap chase at Southwell back in March off a mark of 108. She’s been held off a 6lb higher mark on her last two starts and she was well-beaten at Fontwell in May, finishing last of four beaten 23 lengths. She needs to do more today but she’s 2lbs down in the handicap and this looks to be her grade. Market should guide.
MISTER DON – Has won two handicaps off marks of 91 and 97 and he’s not been far away recently off a mark of 112. He looks vulnerable for win purposes based on the form he has shown of late although he is down in grade today and that will make life far easier. He’s a consistent sort who should give his running but others may offer a bit more value in this.
THE DOORMAN – Ben Haslam’s runner arrives here on the back of an 18 1/2 length defeat over an extended 2m 5f here last month. There was a bit of money around for him that day and he’s down another 4lbs today which could leave him on a threatening mark now down in grade so there are positives to take away from his profile. The ground should be fine and he commands respect.
GOLD IGNOT – Made all when winning at Southwell back in June but he couldn’t follow that effort up when unable to dominate next time out over 2m 3f around here. He steps up in trip today which should be fine having won over 3m previously and he should go well again with Sean Bowen maintaining the partnership. The ground should be ideal and there’s plenty to like about him here.
A TAIL OF INTRIGUE – Was well-supported last time out at Newton Abbot having been sent off the 2/1 favourite but he fell when held up in first-time blinkers. They’re left on again today and he’s likely to be well-supported again off this mark given he looks to be on a fair mark judged on his earlier efforts this year. The yard have an excellent 29% strike rate at Market Rasen.
WASHED ASHORE – Was only beaten 4 1/2 lengths over C&D back in June and he’s been left on the same mark today. He’s lightly-raced with just ten runs to his name and he should be up to winning a race of this nature off a mark of 106. He should progress again over fences and Aidan Coleman keeps the partnership intact so he holds leading claims in this against more exposed rivals.
ROUGH JUSTICE – John Wainwright’s runner was once rated 130 but he’s lost his way of late and makes his first start for the yard today. He unseated his rider on his last start at Kelso when struggling in rear and he’s been left on a mark of 100 following that run. He may need a lower mark than this to be seen to best effect and he’s opposed today.
PENA DORADA – Without a win since July 2015 and he’s changed hands several times since. He has run twice for the Alistair Whillans yard but he’s shown a limited amount of form in both starts and the handicapper has dropped him a full 10lbs following his last start when beaten 81-lengths. That gives him a chance in this but he’s regressive and others make more appeal.
SIRIUS STAR – Has course form at Market Rasen although he didn’t perform well over an extended 2m 4f here back in June. He was beaten 18 1/2 lengths that day and he fell on his next start when already struggling with no chance of success. He’s only been dropped a pound following that run and others make much more appeal in this.
CHARLIE MON – One win from 21 career starts tells its own story for Mike Hammond’s runner. That success came three starts ago at Huntingdon when running on gamely to hold off his rivals although he’s struggled off a higher mark since. He still looks weighted against it off a 4lb higher mark and can only be watched today.
