Ten runners go to post for the feature race at Hexham racecourse. Irish raider See Double You will be looking to win the race once again at the ripe old age of 14. Read on for our expert analysis, runner by runner guide and free racing tip for the contest.
IN SUMMARY: Former Irish trained runner Barry’s Jack looks very interesting on just his second start for the Brian Ellison stable and could still be anything whilst Vertigo looks very progressive and could have more improvement to come. Our vote goes to the top weight RYEDALE RACER who is without doubt the best horse in the race and if he can handle the hefty weight, he will take a lot of stopping today. This is a drop in class and the best northern rider, Brian Hughes, is on board.
RYEDALE RACER – Six year old gelding from the Malcolm Jefferson yard who does have the burden of top weight but he will find this a lot easier than the 0-140 he contested at Ayr last time out when well beat back in 4th behind Runswick Royal. He relishes the forecast heavy ground and with Brian Hughes booked once more, the former course and distance winner could well have far too much class for his rivals in this 0-120.
VERTIGO – Lightly raced and progressive five year old who hacked up by 21 lengths in a maiden hurdle at Ayr earlier this month. A mark of 114 may not be beyond him now tackling handicaps and seven pound claimer Alexander Thorne makes the job a lot easier – he is an extremely capable rider with four winners from his last ten rides. Very interesting runner who also won his bumper here at Hexham.
TIKKANDEMICKEY – Battle hardened course and distance winner who is now the ripe old age of 11 but continues to give very good account’s of himself. His win here in 2015 came off a mark of 115 and he runs off 112 today so the handicapper has given him a chance. His overall profile would suggest he is vulnerable to a progressive young type though.
SEE DOUBLE YOU – Won this race last year for the McNally’s from Ireland and they are back over to try claim the race again with this now 14 year old. He arrived here in form when he won the race last year and sadly that is now the case in 2017, either tailed off or pulled up on his three starts this season to date. This place will need to bring out the best in him once more but he simply could be too old now.
DUBAI DEVILS – Another Irish raider, this time in the shape of the Paul Stafford stable who are frequent visitors to the United Kingdom. This six year old is yet to win from his nine starts to date but he has run some big races in defeat, finishing second at Musselburgh, Bangor and most recently Towcester last time out. He enjoys cut in the ground and is off a reasonable mark so should be thereabouts.
BEYONDTEMPTATION – Nine year old mare who has nine career wins to here name, four of which came here at Hexham so she clearly has a love affair with this track. She arrives here in very good form, second at Ayr over an inadequate two miles in January, won a four runner affair at Newcastle over the extended two miles in February and finished second at Sedgefield earlier this month off this mark. Respected.
MODULUS – Eight year old gelding who is bred for plenty of speed being by Motivator and the Peter Winks inmate arrives here in terrific form with three wins from his last four starts at Uttoxeter, Newcastle and Sedgefield, moving from a mark of 90 up to 108 today. He is up another three pounds for a two length success last time out so will have to improve again but he may well do that and has to be respected.
HOLLYWOOD ALL STAR – Started out life on the flat and didn’t have a single win from 19 runs so he was then switched to hurdles where he did have more success, landing three victories from 27 starts to date. The latest win came at Uttoxeter off a two pound lower mark in 2015 so he isn’t exactly well treated and although he ran a good race when 2nd at Bangor recently, others are more persuasive.
BARRY’S JACK – The market is usually a good guide when it comes to the Brian Ellison stable so watch out for a market move on this one. He was a winner at Limerick at Christmas when trained in Ireland and this is just his second start for the stable, given a soft introduction at Stratford earlier this month. Could be a very interesting contender and is now in very good hands.
RINNAGREE ROSIE – Runs from a long way out of the weights here and will need to improve about a stone on his recent second at Newcastle off a mark of 82 to win this contest. Looks an extremely unlikely winner at the weights and will be a more interesting prospect when dropped back down in class.
