3.20pm Newmarket Tips & Betting Preview 13/04/2016

IN SUMMARY: A small field with what looks like just the two serious contenders in the odds on Gifted Master and our value for money alternative WATERLOO BRIDGE (13/8).  Bottom line is the jolly has the best form but may not be quite so effective as a three year old at sprinting trips and it may be worth taking a risk with the Irish raider.

1 GIFTED MASTER (8/13)– Seems the obvious favourite and perhaps most likely winner with reports from Newmarket that he has wintered well and is in for a profitable season. He holds Irish raider Waterloo Bridge quite comfortably on earlier Newmarket form but that was over seven furlongs and we do note he ended last season over a mile. Breeding suggests the softer ground won’t be an issue but the drop back to six at least creates question marks? 

2 JOULES (150/1)–  A son of Oasis Dream this will be his first start for Natalie Lloyd-Beavis having left the Charlie Hills yard for his new owners. Cost 215,000 Guineas as a yearling but changed hands recently for £6500 which tells its own story – should be outclassed today but will pick up a minimum of £2960 even if he is a long way last.

3 TIGERWOLF (18/1) – Still a maiden after three runs with the best of those a close to six lengths fourth to Gifted Master here. Looks the sort to make a better three year old and the Mick Channon yard are in good form, but this ought to be asking too much of him for now.

4 WATERLOO BRIDGE (13/8) – Travels over from Ireland for Aidan O’Brien but is held by Gifted Master on earlier form here as a two year old. Ran a lot better than his finishing position suggests in the Breeders Cup behind Kentucky Derby hope Nyquist and may be better back over shorter trips having already won the Norfolk Stakes over the minimum trip at Royal Ascot. Racing profile of seven races as a juvenile suggests he is not one of the better horses in the yard but he might not need to be to win here 

5 HILLSIDE DREAM (80/1)– Still a maiden after nine races which isn’t promising and seems sure to find the principles too good for him here. Has placed three times so has some ability but not in this sort of company and it will be a shock if the son of Dream Ahead can win today.
