2.50pm Wolverhampton Tips & Betting Preview 28/03/2017

This is a competitive maiden over 1 mile, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.

IN SUMMARY: There are a couple of really nice types in this and ARMAGNAC could be the best bet here. He’s got plenty of experience and looked to really enjoy this surface when last seen so he should take all the beating now gelded and returned from off a break. William Sayle is probably the biggest threat for a trainer with an excellent strike rate here whilst Golden Wolf is likely to attract market support.

1 BITE MY TONGUE – Only 4yo in the race and must give over a stone away to all his rivals in this. He’s related to a winner over 7 furlongs as well as two maidens and his pedigree doesn’t suggest he’s likely to strike on his first attempt. Connections have used a claimer to try and ease some of the burden but the yard are without a winner in their last 13 attempts and he’s best watched here on debut.

2 ARMAGNAC – 38,000 Euro yearling who began to get the hang of racing late on last year. He finished second in a Class 6 Wolverhampton maiden to a horse that has gone on to win four times since raising from a mark of 73 to 84. That piece of form is the strongest in the race and connections have gelded him over the winter so he could turn out to be a much-improved type today. He does race off a 136-day break but he may not need to be at peak fitness to win this. Yard are in good form of late with two winners from their last 6 runners.

3 FORESTRY – He’s a gelded son of Firebreak out of a mare that failed to win in 28 career starts over 1m 4f and further. His trainer has been in good form of late with a winner from his last 3 runners and he has an okay strike rate of 11% at Wolverhampton but his mount doesn’t have a profile that suggests he’s likely to be a forward 3yo. A 7lb claimer takes only his second ever ride under rules and he’s best watched here.

4 GOLDEN WOLF – Richard Hughes bought this colt for 48,000 Euros as a yearling and he made a good introduction to racing at a massive 50/1 in November. He finished third of 14 and with normal progression he has a massive chance in this if he can improve on that again. He’s not been gelded which is usually a positive sign at this stage of a horse’s career and his trainer has sent out some nice maiden winners of late. Market should be revealing but he has a big chance in this.

5 MAJOR CORNWALLIS – £10,000 yearling and has been something of a mixed bag since arriving on the racecourse. He’s finished second on three attempts to date but he hasn’t followed those efforts up and he finished last in March over a mile at Newcastle. Connections haven’t opted for any headgear as of late and on official ratings he’s the same as Armagnac but he’s a far less reliable prospect and it’s hard to know what to expect.

6 WILLIAM SAYLE – 100,000GNS 2yo who was well-supported on debut but didn’t show much having finished eight of 11 runners. He was only beaten 3 lengths and he should come on a lot for that experience and arrives here for a trainer with a stunning 37% strike rate at Wolverhampton. He’s got a big chance in this with normal progression expected and Andrea Atzeni is booked (18% strike rate here). Respected and market worth a second look.

7 DIAMANTE – 40,000 Euro purchase and has been very well-beaten on two starts to date on the turf and on the sand. She’s by Big Bad Bob so she will probably want further than this in time and her form to date suggests she lacks a bit of pace. She won’t be seen to best effect here if it’s a slowly-run affair and she may be one for handicaps further down the line over further back on the turf. Trainer has a 14% strike rate here.
