IN SUMMARY: CAPELAND looks sure to relish this step up in trip, staying on well last time out behind a well handicapped horse. He can improve still further this season, starting with a victory here. Golan Fortune is worth another chance to back up the impression he made when he was third at Uttoxeter, he may be the main danger. Cesar Et Rosalie is another to consider providing the ground doesn’t soften too much more, he is well treated off the same mark as when second last time.
CAPELAND – On the bare face of things, a rise for his defeat last time looks harsh, but the winner looks a smart recruit and the sharp track didn’t suit this horse. This trip on a stiff track will see him in a better light, with anymore rain a welcome edition. Looks the one to beat.
WINTERFELL – Runner-up to Sceau Royal on his English debut, he was absent almost two years prior to last time. He travelled well before tiring a long way from home on that occasion, fully entitled to need the run. Trip should suit but can only be watched.
VICENZO MIO – Just a single win in twelve starts for Paul Nicholls, his new yard does well with Ditcheat cast offs. Became inconsistent for Nicholls and is entitled to need the run, but conditions suit so will be interesting to note for future.
BASTIEN – Didn’t stay on his first attempt at this trip in February on a sharper track. Conditions are no issue and lightly raced enough to be open to progression, but this stiffer track is a huge question mark.
PADDYS RUNNER – Three hurdling wins have all come at shorter. Only went under by a nose at this trip last time, but on a sharp track in a race run at a crawl. Not sure to relish the extra stamina demands of this test, needs more.
CESAR ET ROSALIE – Steadily progressive this year, a strong runner-up effort last time on handicap debut. The assessor has kindly left his mark unchanged, but his sole run on soft ground was by a long way his worst. Any further softening of the ground is a serious concern.
ROYAL IRISH HUSSAR – Has failed to fulfil his early potential, winless in four years. A long way behind Capeland on his seasonal return, hard to give him much of a chance at this level given his continued regression.
DINSDALE – No more than a fair effort when stepped up to close to this trip last season. Ran no sort of a race on his return at Chepstow when pulled up over shorter. Plenty of questions to be answered on the back of that.
MR FICKLE – Slipped a long way in the weights before finally cashing in, twelve pounds above his March win now. Thoroughly exposed, tough to support in a field where others retain far more scope for improvement.
GOLAN FORTUNE – Cheekpieces saw him take a big step forward when third in September. Didn’t back the impression up last time, but he is well treated on his September run with this a step down in class from when last seen. Interesting each way option.
STONEMADFORSPEED – Dual winner in October at about this trip, not quite getting home over further last time. This is a deeper race, so although the step back in trip should suit, it’s hard to give him more than an outside squeak. Further rain would be another negative.
SUNNYTAHLIATEIGAN – Well placed to win a pair of handicaps in April over this trip. Shaped better than the bare result last time over a trip too short, needs more to get involved here but could still have progression in the tank. Rain would be a question mark.
