IN SUMMARY: RAZIN’ HELL has won nearly half of his sixteen starts at this venue and can further improve his record by taking this. There are a number of course and distance winners in the lineup and it may be the progressive Piazon that serves it up to the selection.
DUNGANNON – Enjoys this track having won three times here and this was the scene of his last win. Races off four pounds higher today however and has not been blessed with a good draw so may have to settle for a place at best on this occasion.
BOSHAM – Has won six times over this distance but makes his first appearance at Southwell today. Was placed off a mark nearly eleven pounds higher than he runs off today in December 2016 and should go on the surface on pedigree so has a chance.
ARZAAK – Won a couple of times earlier in the year and has a very consistent profile. A mark of 86 is manageable considering he was beaten less than a length three times off 84 and 85, this course and distance runner should go well from a tough draw.
MIDNIGHT MALIBU – Made his all weather debut last time and was only beaten two lengths off the same mark as he runs off today. Won off two pounds lower back in August at Epsom so clearly has the talent to go well of this type of mark and his draw isn’t too bad.
RAZIN’ HELL – A course specialist who has won seven of his sixteen starts at this venue and must be respected on that fact alone. Was second of this mark at this track in February having won off two pounds lower the time before and should run his race again.
PIAZON – Has won his last three starts and this venue and would be chasing a four timer if he hadn’t gone to Sandown in the interim. He is a progressive horse who loves the conditions here and should continue to improve; respected.
MUJASSAM – Switched to the David O’Meara yard back in 2016 but has yet to record a win since then. Makes his all weather debut today and although he is well-drawn it is difficult to see him winning this considering how badly out of form he has been.
MUSHARRIF – Beaten half a length off this mark three starts ago and has potential to run well again based off that effort. Ger O’Neill takes off a valuable seven pounds here so should be considered in what looks a rather open race.
ALEEF – A talented horse who was beaten off a twelve pound higher mark in November 2016 so is clearly well handicapped. Has been out of sorts as of late however and although he has the talent to go in off this mark he comes here with something to prove.
ALPHA TAURI – Another in this field who has won seven times at this venue but his last couple of successes have come over further. Doesn’t look impossibly handicapped based on ability but over five furlongs he is hard to take an interest in.
ZAPPER CASS – Won off one pound higher mark than he runs off today back in June at Nottingham. Hasn’t been at his best since then and a string of below par efforts don’t do much to inspire confidence that he’ll be winning today.
GNAAD – Another course and distance winner who was slightly disappointing when chasing a hat-trick at York last time out. Six furlongs was probably not ideal when beaten last time and back to a course he likes and a distance he’ll appreciate he should be considered.
TREATY OF ROME – Has won three of his ten starts here and has only been out of the frame twice. Was only beaten half a length behind Piazon last time and remains feasibly treated so it would be a surprise were he not to run another big one.
CROSSE FIRE – Somewhat of a standing dish at this track having run here twenty-six times and won seven of those starts. Has a slight problem with breaking on terms but if he does so then he has an each-way chance at least.
