IN SUMMARY: Strath Burn will be a very tough nut to crack if able to match the form of his excellent second in the Haydock Park Sprint Cup last season but he might have been slightly flattered by the way that race panned out and this can go to THE TIN MAN (5/2), who also performed with credit at the highest level in 2015 and still has low mileage. Naadirr can probably be excused his defeat in the 5f Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai and has a decent each-way shout, along with Watchable and Baccarat.
Dutch Masterpiece – Gained narrow success in 5f Listed event at Ascot in October but is yet fully to convince over 6f and hasn’t been at his best on either start this season; looks vulnerable under his penalty.
Baccarat – Former Wokingham winner who missed 2015 but returned for new stable to win valuable Meydan handicap (6f, good) in February; also ran well when sixth in Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket (6f, good to soft) last month and probably won’t be far away.
Code Red – Scored over 7f at this level at Epsom on Oaks day just under a year ago and subsequently reached the frame in two Group races over that trip, but last month’s reappearance run was disappointing and some of the 6f specialists make more appeal here.
Humidor – Won three 5f handicaps last season but was well-beaten 66-1 shot in Newmarket Group 3 over that trip on last month’s seasonal debut and faces another tough assignment here.
Naadirr – Began last season with Listed success at Doncaster (6f, good) and signed off with very respectable fifth in Group 1 event at Ascot on Champions’ Day; found the 5f Al Quoz Sprint too hot on last of three starts in Dubai in early 2016 but his two handicap runs there beforehand were decent and he has a part to play here.
Poyle Vinnie – Outran 50/1 odds when excellent second in the Ayr Gold Cup (6f, good) in September but even that career-best performance leaves him with something to find in this company and he’s been a bit disappointing on both starts this year.
Strath Burn – Not seen since finishing down the field on Champions’ Day in October but won a small-field Group 3 at Newbury (6f, good to firm) last summer before going very close in the Group 1 Haydock Park Sprint Cup; will be hard to beat back in Listed company if on song after absence.
The Tin Man – Lightly raced 4yo who impressed in a good-quality Ascot handicap (6f, good) in October and was a very creditable fourth over that C&D when upped to Group 1 company on Champions’ Day a couple of weeks later; could easily have a good season in top-notch sprints ahead of him.
Watchable – Has modest strike-rate for a horse of his ability (2-18) but held his own in Group company last season, perhaps most notably when fourth in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville (6.5f, good); recent reappearance run in Haydock conditions race was satisfactory; in the mix if change if headgear has positive effect.
King Of Rocks – The only 3yo in the line-up; placed in 5f Group races at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood last season but had to settle for midfield finish in 6f Listed event on recent reappearance and will need to take a big leap forward to trouble the older horses here.
