IN SUMMARY: Soul Brother responded well to first-time blinkers when a clearcut winner at Thirsk last month and should cope with today’s faster ground but the handicapper has reacted sternly and a new career-best performance is required to couple a double here. Preference is for GRAND BEAUTY (4/1), a lightly raced 4yo who looked in excellent form when winning twice in September and made a pleasing reappearance last month. Olivia Fallow won her latest start and also has scope to progress this year, but has a 280-day layoff to overcome. Clergyman exceeded expectations when a staying-on fourth behind Soul Brother after a long absence at Thirsk last month, but may find himself outpaced on fast ground over this trip.
Jebediah Shine – Has made good progress over the last year, winning six times over 5f; her two most recent victories were gained on Polytrack and her latest run on that surface was slightly disappointing, but she’s on a workable mark if able to match her best form back on turf.
Olivia Fallow – Two wins last season, the more recent when last in action at Thirsk (5f, good) in August; not yet fully exposed and could have more to offer as a 4yo, but will need to resume in peak form to overcome current mark.
Kibaar – Out of form during light campaign for Barry Hills in 2015 but made pleasing reappearance for new stable when third at Beverley (5f, soft) last month; not in same form over 6f at Doncaster a couple of weeks ago but continues to lurk on a dangerous handicap mark and is fine on fast ground.
Long Awaited – Very versatile ground-wise and made quite encouraging seasonal debut when fifth at Beverley (5f, soft) last month but finished down the field behind Soul Brother at Thirsk on latest outing and a bigger concern is that he hasn’t tasted victory since August 2012.
Grand Beauty – Won her maiden at Newcastle (5f, good to soft) in September and follow-up with front-running success on handicap debut at Bath (5f, firm) a few days later; also ran well when third on last month’s reappearance (5f, AW) and can play a leading role if building on that performance here.
Soul Brother – Ended last season with two disappointing efforts and made low-key return to action last month but was seemingly perked up by a change of headgear when scoring at Thirsk (5f, soft) a couple of weeks ago; subsequent 6lb rise asks a lot of him but today’s faster gorund won’t be a problem if the blinkers continue to have a positive effect.
Rusty Rocket – Returned to form when close second on Fibresand after break in March and didn’t run badly when fifth back on turf at Thirsk (5f, good) last month but remains 1lb above his last winning mark and has become rather inconsistent; others have more appealing profiles.
Clergyman – Reached the frame on all six 2yo starts, climaxing with 6f AW maiden win; missed 2015 but made good late headway when fourth to Soul Brother on seasonal/handicap/stable debut at Thirsk (5f, soft) last month; may find 5f on fast ground a bit sharp but still enters calculations.
Bashiba – Won twice over 5f at Doncaster last year and was placed off mark 1lb higher than today’s at Ripon (5f, good) on final start in 2015; well down the field on both outings this season, though, and probably best watched until showing something more encouraging.
Rosy Morning – The only 3yo in the line-up; ran quite well from the front when third on seasonal debut at Chelmsford (6f, AW) but finished last of six (albeit on soft ground) when dropped to 5f on turf last time; may be better suited by today’s conditions but not one for a huge amount of faith.
