Trends Analysis: Saturday 15th Feb 2020

Providing the expected storm ‘Dennis’ isn’t too much of a menace, this Saturday the ITV racing team will hopefully be showing us seven races across three venues in what is set to be another fascinating afternoon of racing.

Ascot is the day’s showcase fixture and all eyes will be on the top-rated chaser in training – Cyrname – who bids to follow-up last year’s win in the Betfair Ascot Chase (3.35).

Up at Haydock, we’ve the Unibet Grand National Trial (3:15) – however, with no winning horse from this ‘so-called’ trial going onto win the Aintree Grand National then the race title has to be taken with a pinch of salt!

At Wincanton, the Betway Kingwell Hurdle (2:45) is their main race – a prize the Alan King yard have landed twice in the last three years – he tries again with his 2018 winner Elgin.

TV Stats ‘146/1 Cracker Acca’

1.50 Ascot: The Nicky Henderson yard have a 29% strike-rate with their chasers at Ascot, plus have won three of the last ten renewals of this race. With that in mind, their PYM gets the nod. This seven-year-old is the only proven course and distance winner in the field and is now two-from-two since being upped in trip to three miles of further. A good run here and it could be off the Cheltenham Festival for the RSA Chase.

2.25 Ascot: Old-timer REGAL ENCORE is still showing a love for his racing after a cracking win over course and distance back in December. He’s had a few months to get over that race and is only four pounds higher here. This twelve-year-old is also a past winner (2018) of this race and came third twelve months ago off a six-pound higher mark. His recent form at Ascot also reads well 1-3-2-1, so another bold showing looks on the cards in a race he tends to run well in.

2.45 Wincanton: Several with strong claims in this Grade Two, but it might be worth taking a chance on the Alan King-trained ELGIN, who landed this prize in 2018, despite returning from a long layoff. The yard has also won two of the last three runnings and three of the last the last nine renewals.

3.35 Ascot: All eyes will be on the top-rated chaser in the land – CYRNAME – here as he bids to get back to winning ways. After taking the scalp of the mighty Altior here back in November he clearly failed to see out the three-mile trip in the King George last time out. However, he’s back in distance and also returns to a track he’s won his last three races at, so this Paul Nicholls runner will be all the rage here.
