We are now just two weeks away from the Cheltenham Festival and the excitement levels are rising steadily – Find our Cheltenham Festival tips here. We take a look back at the action that took place over the last seven days. Sadly, Barry Geraghty will miss the festival due to a slightly punctured lung and fractured rib due to a nasty fall on Charli Parcs at Kempton. This is a massive blow to the jockey who had some very favourable rides, we wish him the best of luck on his road to recovery. In other news, Thistlecrack is back in the Gold Cup betting as reports filter through that he will have a second scan this week. Could this be “Binocular II” ?

Performance Of The Week

Nicky Henderson has a plethora of talented horses to do battle with this season and another Supreme Novices’ Hurdle candidate arrived on the scene at the weekend in the shape of RIVER WYLDE. In the hands of Nico De Boinville, this strong travelling sort powered his way through the Grade 2 Dovecote Hurdle, tracked Capitaine then went to the front approaching two out with plenty in the tank. He went clear after the last and looks the perfect type for a Supreme; travels well, speedy and plenty of stamina.

Champion Hurdle – Vroum Vroum Mag or Limini?

Rich Ricci and Willie Mullins have a proper Champion Hurdle and Mares’ Hurdle headache on their hands. It must be a great feeling to have two superb mares in the yard and if rumours are true, Limini will take her place in the Champion Hurdle whilst Vroum Vroum Mag, who is better over further, will run in the Mares’ Hurdle, the race she won last season at the festival. This would mean Limini would have to be supplemented for the Champion Hurdle but it could be a shrewd move considering how easily she beat Apple’s Jade on her seasonal return during the week. That was just her first run of the season so can be expected to improve again and she will be in receipt of that all important seven pound mares’ allowance.

Other Festival News

• The Paul Nicholls trained Frodon is now best priced 20/1 for the JLT Novices’ Chase after his impressive jumping display in the Grade 2 Pendil Novices’ Chase. He beat Gold Present by two lengths in the three runner affair, form that can’t be taken too seriously.
• Camping Ground produced a career best to win the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell by a staggering 29 lengths on Sunday. He is now best priced 25/1 for the Stayers’ Hurdle.
• Joseph O’Brien has a live festival hopeful on his hands in the shape of the J.P. McManus owned Edwulf who won the Nos Na Riagh Handicap Chase at Naas on Sunday. He is best priced 8/1 for the National Hunt Chase.
