Irish Oaks Outsiders Analysed, Who’s Most Likely To Cause An Upset!

The Irish Oaks is one of the five Classics of the Irish flat season and usually attracts a star-studded field of the best of this year’s classic generation. It’s not always a race that goes to the favourites, however, with plenty of double-figure priced winners in recent years. I’ve analysed the outsiders in this year’s Irish Oaks, to see who is most likely to snag a place at big odds, with three places up for grabs! The first of Ralph Beckett’s pair of Waverley Racing owned raiders, she was last seen contesting the Oaks at Epsom, where she finished a running on fourth. She didn’t have the best of luck that day and certainly made plenty of late gains. That showed she stayed the trip well and she’s only got four starts under her belt, so further improvement can be expected. She doesn’t have much to find with either Pink Dogwood or Fleeting, and she’s an obvious place contender on that basis.

Antonia De Vega

Winning of a Group 3 on her second juvenile start, she recovered from injury over the winter when returning with a comfortable Listed victory at Newbury over the ten-furlong distance. Winning three of her four starts, her profile is upwardly mobile and she’s a likely improver now she’s got race-fitness under her belt. There is enough pedigree on her dam side to suggest she can see out the twelve-furlong distance and the booking of Colin Keane is always a positive.

Search For A Song

Racing on just two occasions in her career thus far, Search For A Song is likely to rue that lack of experience in a race full of battle-hardened rivals. A winner of a ten-furlong maiden on debut, she was second to Trethias in Listed company subsequently, suggesting that she needed a step up in distance that day. She gets that here, but she does need to reverse places with that aforementioned rival and post a career-best by a wide margin to get competitive here.

Jessie Harrington’s string is in brilliant form in recent weeks and this expensive purchase arrives on the back of a ten-furlong Listed win at Naas, where she comfortably dispatched of Search For A Song by three lengths. That rival is likely to pose a bigger threat over this longer trip with experience under her belt, but it’s interesting to note that this daughter of Invincible Spirit beat Pink Dogwood to land her maiden last August.

She has plenty of stamina in her pedigree, so twelve furlongs is fine, and improvement for this distance could easily be on the cards. If she does just that, she could be a potent force at a bigger price.

Peach Tree

Well beaten behind a few of these rivals in the Oaks earlier in the year, Peach Tree has failed to improve in 2019 and only scrambled in to land a Group 3 at Leopardstown on her latest outing. This is far tougher and she was comprehensively beaten by Sparkle Roll in the Ribblesdale on the start prior to her latest victory. It would be a huge surprise was she to be good enough at this level.

Operatic Export

The biggest price by a huge margin, that can be no surprise to connections and given she’s posted a peak RPR of just 85 in her five racecourse visits thus far, she shouldn’t be good enough in a race of this nature. She’s the first in the field to dismiss.
