Guide to Friday’s ITV Racing

Willoughby Court jumping a fence at Newbury

The first of what is set to be a couple of pulsating days of racing on terrestrial television. We have four races from Newbury today which includes a pair of Grade 2’s along with a couple of decent handicaps, where the talented Willoughby Court makes his eagerly anticipated return to the track. In addition, the Novice Hurdle that is the race before the action kicks off on ITV, was won by subsequent Grade 1 winner Santini last year so is a race to keep a close eye on. A couple of winners from last years card are aiming to repeat the feat for our ITV Racing tips.

Lostintranslation to reverse the form with La Bague Au Roi

A small but select field of four head to post for the Grade 2 Berkshire Novices’ Chase where Lostintranslation, La Bague Au Roi and Talkischeap all face off again having finished 1-2-3 around here earlier in the month. Warren Greatrex’s Mare came out on top on that occasion, but Colin Tizzard’s Grade 1 runner-up is taken to reverse the form over this shorter trip which should suit him given his top level second over the distance in April. Throw in Dan Skelton’s Spiritofthegames who comfortably took care of the 147-rated Monbeg Legend last time and we’ve got a fascinating contest.

Spinner out to regain the winning thread

This time last year, there was plenty of talk about Sam Spinner after he demolished a field at Haydock and the talk was justified as he went on to Grade 1 glory in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot. Things didn’t quite go to plan in the Stayers’ Hurdles at the Spring Festivals, but he’s back for more. His early season exploits may have taken too much out of him and he’s respected now fresh from a break. Wholestone won’t be an easy horse to beat after his successful return to action at Aintree earlier in the month. He consistently runs to a high level and finished in front of Sam Spinner at Cheltenham in March. Unowhatimeanharry perhaps isn’t quite the force of old but Momella is a fascinating runner on her first start for Harry Fry. She won a PTP over three miles and was placed in Grade 1 company against the boys at the Aintree Festival, there could be plenty more to come from her.
