Frankie’s Fabulous Four – Dettori descends upon Killarney for the first time

Killarney has always been renowned as one of the most scenic racecourses on the planet but as time goes on, the standard of racing has improved massively too. They have played host to a couple of subsequent Epsom Derby winners in Anthony Van Dyck and Wings Of Eagles in recent years. There is a huge star attraction coming to town for the very first time this week though in the shape of Frankie Dettori, who is also a two-time Epsom Derby winner. This is bound to increase the revenue through the gates massively this week and every one of his four rides on Wednesday must be looked at. Frankie is Box Office and this is a great feather in Killarney Racecourse’s cap.

Ride 1 – Time Tunnel

Trained by Dermot Weld, this is bound to be a popular choice for punters in the second race on the card. A half-sister to Father Time who was a King Edward VII winner, she improved massively from first to second start to chase home a smart Jessica Harrington type, Morpho Blue, at the Curragh when last seen. She was flying it at the finish and was forced to switch at a crucial part of the race so the step up to the extended mile here will be right up her street. The visor goes on her for the first time which could be a slight negative this early in her career so she could be a quirky sort.

Ride 2 – Mujid

It is yet another ride for Dermot Weld here for Frankie. It’s hard to know what level of fitness Weld’s horses will have at Killarney this week as the Galway Festival is now just over two weeks away and we all know Dermot likes to keep them all 100% for that Festival. This horse won his maiden here back in May before going on to run a poor eighth in a Limerick handicap. He was hampered close home there but he is going to have to improve a good deal to win this you would expect. The tactics will be highly interesting here. As there is no pronounced front runner in the race, you may well see Frankie try win this from the front on what is a sharp track.

Ride 3 – Lady Wannabe

Is this the real reason Frankie has come to Killarney today? This is the most valuable race on the card, a Listed contest worth €32,450 to the victor. This filly ran a brilliant race in the Group 3 International Stakes at the Curragh last time out, beaten just over two lengths by Buckhurst back in fourth, going off a 20/1 chance. The daughter of Camelot has a bit to find on official figures here with some of her rivals but it has to be highly interesting that Frankie Dettori is booked by Fozzy Stack and one would think we have not seen the very best of this horse just yet.

Ride 4 – Finding Nero

Last but certainly not least, Frankie takes the ride on this one for his former colleague Johnny Murtagh. This three year old gelding was bidding for a hat-trick of wins at Naas last time out but was just nabbed by Claim The Lady in the closing stages. Up another four pounds in the ratings, he is going to have to improve again but that is very possible and Frankie is certainly worth a few pounds in the saddle anyways. Can Frankie land the four-timer? It is certainly a possibility.
