Malmo v Real Madrid – Madrid to win

As is pretty much the norm, Madrid are highly fancied to get the three points in this one, and they really ought to. Domestically, Real could only manage a disappointing 0-0 draw a home to Malaga over the weekend; however, they completely dominated and did everything but score. They cruised to victory in CL match day one, beating Shaktar 4-0, and a similar result will be expected from one of the competitions big boys tonight. Malmo on the other hand played poorly as they suffered a 2-0 defeat away to PSG in their first group game. They offered little threat in that game and really should’ve been beaten more. Despite strong home form domestically, they are expected to come up short against a Madrid side who not only have far superior quality, but should be highly motivated to get the job done tonight following that set back in the league on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid v Benfica – Atletico Madrid to win

Much like their Madrid rivals, Atletico tasted disappointment at the weekend as they were defeated 1-0 by Villareal. Given their form prior to that game, they can be forgiven a below par performance and are expected to get back to winning ways this evening. They have looked a very good side this season, and were fairly comfortable winners of their opening group game (2-0 away win against Galatasary). Benfica were also 2-0 victors on match day one, but they did play Kazakhstan side Astana, who really weren’t much of a threat. The away form of the Portuguese side has been poor of late, having lost 1-0 in each of their last two on the road. Facing a side who are known for being tough to beat at home, they could struggle once more. Overall, Atletico – if returning to their better form – should have enough in the locker to come out on top.

Borussia M. GLadbach v Man City – Gladbach to win

This might come as a bit of a surprise, but it has to be said, City have not been at their best recently, and once again will be without a player tonight. Without their captain, Vincent Kompany Man City could be set to struggle in the Rhineland this evening. Despite being slightly unlucky with a couple of decisions against Spurs at the weekend, they played poorly and were deservedly beaten. As is often the case, they played high up the pitch in that game and were counter attacked several times. If they are not up to the task defensively again tonight, they could be in for the same fate against a Gladbach team, who traditionally look to exploit teams on the counter. The return to fitness of a few important players, has seen the side who finished third in the Bundesliga last term return to form of late. They’ve won their last two and have scored seven goals in doing so. It is highly likely that this game will produce yet more goals, and given the current form of each side, it is Gladbach who get the nod.

Shakhtar v PSG – PSG to win

On paper this one has quite an open look to it. Shakhtar aren’t a bad side and are often quite hard to beat. Playing at home tonight, having lost on match day one, it is likely that they won’t just sit back but will try to play. This could play nicely into the hands of a PSG side who are blessed with plenty of pace and attacking talent. On this basis the visitors should be able to fashion plenty of chances here. Shakhtar can be a bit of a mixed bag in truth, they are usually very strong domestically, but often tend to struggle against the big boys in the CL. They have also recently lost at home against Dnipro, and drew 2-2 against Rapid Vienna in the qualifier. PSG on the other hand have been near flawless away from home this season, scoring ten goals in their last five away games, and are yet to taste defeat, dropping points just once. There could be goals in this game, but PSG should have more about them in the final third and can come out on top.
