IN SUMMARY: There’s probably more to come from Roger Varian’s lightly raced 3yo, Taneen, who wasn’t beaten far in a hot Newmarket handicap when last in action three months ago, but this can go to CHOOKIE ROYALE. Keith Dalgleish’s 8yo was soundly beaten on turf on his latest appearance but Polytrack conditions races such as this are very much his niche, and he collected three of them between November and January. Lord Of The Land has run well in Group company on a few occasions this year and also needs to be taken very seriously.
Rivellino – Stayed on to gain narrow-margin success in Listed company at Lingfield (6f, AW) in February and also ran very well when sixth in the Stewards’ Cup at Glorious Goodwood (6f, good to firm) in July; below best on last two starts, though, and has to concede weight to all his rivals here.
Chookie Royale – Well beaten in 7f turf handicap on latest outing in July but is a much better horse on the AW; won three conditions races from November to January (6f-7f; two of them here) and was creditable fourth in a 6f Newcastle Group 3 in June; good chance at today’s weights if fully tuned up after break.
Basil Berry – Very useful AW handicapper who comes here after 6l win in three-runner conditions race at Yarmouth (6f, good to firm) last month; however, the short-priced favourite under-performed there and the 3lb penalty he incurs could leave him vulnerable here.
Amazour – Held on well to win a Class 2 handicap at Newcastle (6f, AW) in June and has a good each-way shout if able to match that performance here, but has a very patchy overall record and needs to bounce back from two disappointing turf runs.
Huntsmans Close – Quite lightly raced in recent years and unseated his rider leaving the stalls on latest outing last month but is a very useful handicapper when on song and went close at Goodwood (6f, good) in May; not out of this if suited by the surface on AW debut.
Lord Of The Land – Not at best in 7f Chantilly Group 3 race last month but ran well in defeat three consecutive times at that level on turf beforehand; will be fine on today’s surface and is sure to appreciate today’s drop in class; visor the headgear of choice today; major player.
Dhahmaan – Won a Listed race at Doncaster (6f, good to soft) just under a year ago but is yet to match that form after four starts this year and was down the field in a handicap on latest outing in July; won his only previous Polytrack start but needs first-time blinkers to have positive effect after three-month break.
Taneen – Lightly raced 3yo who quickened clear to make a winning handicap debut at Leicester (6f, good to firm) in May and also ran well when sixth of 20 in valuable contest at Newmarket (6f, good to firm) in July; untested on the AW but can pose a potent threat if suited by this surface.
