A seven furlong maiden contest for juvenile fillies, this looks a solid enough contest for the Tapeta. Our expert tip and runner by runner preview are below.
IN SUMMARY: CHRISELLAINE has a damline full of Group 1 winners and while she may not be up to that level, she showed more than enough on her debut to think that she is more than capable of picking up a maiden. Grise Lightning is another from a smart family; she was runner-up on her debut at Hamilton, running on in the style of a filly who will relish this step up in trip. Military Madame and North Bay Sunrise are both interesting enough debutantes to consider from an each way point of view in a solid looking race.
ALACRITAS – Homebred was nibbled at in the market on her Yarmouth debut, but failed to show much immediate promise when finishing tenth of eleven. She is the only representative on the card from the Newmarket yard of David Simcock which makes her of interest for all that the stable are scuffling for winners. Her half-brother is a ten furlong winner so better should be forthcoming now that she steps up from six to seven.
CHAMPARISI – Beaten a long way on her debut, improving plenty for that initial experience when reappearing. She just lacked a turn of foot in the finish there but was still a respectable third, with this step up in trip looking in her favour. Her yard are not an obvious starting point in juvenile races, but that recent third gives her a shout if adapting to the different surface.
CHEF UNITED – Beaten more than 12 lengths by Champarisi on her racecourse debut. She is entitled to learn from that experience. However, she will make far more appeal after her third run when she can take in low grade nurseries than she does in this field.
CHRISELLAINE – Made a promising debut when fourth in an Ayr maiden that looked stronger than this one. She was a shade free in the early stages, but still put her head down and battled in the closing stages. She is from a damline containing a number of Group 1 winners, including Chriselliam who was also trained by Charlie Hills. Looks a huge player if she can build on that.
DADDYS POPPET – Travelled well on her debut at Newbury before fading out of things on the soft ground. Given her American based pedigree that is no surprise and she should prove effective on this surface. The dam side of her pedigree is stamina laden, but she didn’t look short of speed on her debut. The step up in trip should suit and she holds a solid each way chance.
FORMIGA – One of only two in this line-up who has experience of an artificial surface having been placed twice on sand. They have only been a seller and a claimer, so the form is nothing to write home about, but the experience is a big plus for her. Needs a little more back in maiden company against a few choicely bred opponents.
GRISE LIGHTNING – A half-sister to a number of winners in France, she showed plenty of promise on her debut on Hamilton. That was over six furlongs, so the step up to this seventh is going to be in her favour. She split a much more experienced pair there who already had handicap ratings in the 70s. If this surface is no issue, she is another in with a sound chance of hitting the frame.
MILITARY MADAME – Related to a slew of winners, including a half-sister who was also in training with John Quinn. That sibling won on her racecourse debut, as did a half-brother, so she has every right to be forward enough to do herself justice. The yard do better on turf than the sand with their juveniles, but she is worth watching closely in the market.
NORTH BAY SUNRISE – Unraced, sire has long been a source of precocious juveniles while her dam won as a juvenile herself so there is enough from her pedigree to suggest that she will be capable of winning in 2017. The Ed Vaughan yard are 2/2 on artificial surfaces with their juveniles this season so, despite this looking a deep enough race, she is entitled to respect.
SHARP REMINDER – Showed promise on her debut, staying on at one pace over this trip at Kempton. Her half brother stays two miles on the flat and, although she is by a speed influence, she appears to be cut from the same cloth. She is entitled to come on plenty for that initial experience but may need further already to show her best.
SHESAIDYES – Picked a few off late on when making her debut over six furlongs at Yarmouth. She suggested there that the step up to this trip would be in her favour and that the experience shouldn’t be lost on her. This is a strong enough contest for the Tapeta so she may not be quite forward enough to make an impact, but she should make an impression once she is handicapped.
