4.30pm Haydock Tips & Betting Preview 01/09/2016

Thursday’s Haydock card features a good-quality 1m4f handicap. Our betting tips focus on a horse that ran a big race at the York Ebor meeting. Read our race preview for the lowdown.

IN SUMMARY: STARS OVER THE SEA doesn’t look obviously well handicapped after his recent exploits but he was right in the thick of things throughout when fourth in a valuable contest at the York Ebor meeting last month and is selected to overcome a 2lb nudge up the weights here. His most interesting rival is Godolphin’s lightly raced 4yo, Important Message, who has been absent since finishing third on his handicap debut just over a year ago but could have untapped potential. Zamperini is up in class today but did well to win over 1m2f at Sandown in July and there is significant hope today’s step up in trip will unlock some improvement.

1 Stars Over The Sea – Scored by 5l at Pontefract (1m4f, good to firm) last month and subsequent fourth at the York Ebor meeting (1m4f, good to firm) was also a very creditable performance; been nudged up another 2lb since last time but this race looks less competitive; respected.

2 Cymro – Made winning stable debut at Thirsk (1m4f, soft) in April and ran well in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester the following month; good chance on that evidence but his last three runs have all been very disappointing; needs to get back on track.

3 Felix Mendelssohn – Lightly raced for his age but ran very poorly on seasonal debut in April and was never in contention when midfield in valuable event at Ascot (1m4f, good to soft) in June; not written off just yet but it takes a leap of faith to support him.

4 Important Message – Godolphin-owned 4yo who won his maiden at Lingfield (1m4f, AW) last summer and finished a good third off today’s mark on subsequent handicap debut at Newmarket (1m4f, good); back from 383-day absence here but open to improvement if fully revved up.

5 Snoano – Came good for new stable at York (1m4f, good to soft) in June and was placed in the Old Newton Cup at Haydock (1m4f, soft) on his next outing; not at best when back at York for latest run and would make more appeal on slower ground, but still enters calculations.

6 Stockhill Diva – Displayed jolt of improvement to win by 7l at Windsor (11.6f, good to firm) in May and went close off revised mark at Newmarket (1m4f, heavy) the following month; not disgraced in Listed company last time but needs to find something extra to hit the target again.

7 Ruwasi – Two 1m4f wins this season but beat just two rivals on the more recent occasion and went up 5lb for that; not yet fully exposed but never really threatened off revised mark at Ascot (1m4f, good to firm) on latest outing and further improvement required now.

8 Gabrial’s King – Runner-up over C&D (good to firm) last month and posted a very solid performance when sixth in a competitive event at the York Ebor meeting (1m4f, good to firm) a fortnight ago; probably won’t be far away but, as an exposed 7yo, is vulnerable to younger legs.

9 Zamperini – Down the field on first two starts this season but overcome some traffic problems to gain narrow-margin success at Sandown (1m2f, good to soft) in July; 5lb higher in a stronger race here but evidently in good heart and has often shaped as though today’s new trip will suit.

10 Beaverbrook – Well beaten on latest outing but was one of two runners to race away from the others that day and is probably better judged on his very respectable seventh at Glorious Goodwood (1m4f, good to firm) two starts ago; 3lb lower here and remains unexposed over 1m4f but 1-16 strike-rate is poor for a horse of his ability.

myracing Forecast Prices: 3/1 Stars Over The Sea, 7/2 Important Message, 6/1 Zamperini, 8/1 Ruwasi, Beaverbrook, 10/1 Stockhill Diva, 12/1 Cymro, Snoano, Gabrial’s King, 16/1 Felix Mendelssohn
