4.20pm Nottingham Tips & Betting Preview 12/08/2016

12 runners have been declared for the valuable Colwick Cup at Nottingham on Friday. Read our horse-by-horse race preview for our experts’ betting tips.

IN SUMMARY: A good case can be made for Sir Michael Stoute’s 3yo filly, Engage, who didn’t get the best of runs when second at Newbury four weeks ago and might be seen to better effect if the pace is stronger here. However, it’s hard to get away from WHO DARES WINS, who did very well over hurdles after joining Alan King in the autumn and is 3lb ahead of the handicapper here, having returned to the Flat with an impressive recent win at Chester. Forgotten Hero comes here after two very creditable runs over shorter trips at York and is next on the list. Hatsaway and Jack Bear also deserve mentions.

1 Forgotten Hero – Didn’t take to hurdling on stable debut in December but been in good form back on the Flat in recent weeks and comes here after finishing close second on consecutive starts at York (1m2f/1m4f); looks well worth a crack at today’s trip and no surprise if he’s in the thick of things again.

2 Who Dares Wins – Won a Grade 2 juvenile hurdle in December and looked in excellent nick back on the Flat recently, scoring by 5l at Chester (1m4f, good); 3lb ahead of the handicapper under a 6lb penalty here and the trip/ground will suit; needs to be taken very seriously.

3 Cardinal Walter – Useful hurdler who has run very respectably over about 2m on both Flat starts this season, more recently when seventh in the Northumberland Plate consolation race at Newcastle (AW) in June; might find some of these better handicapped but should be fine over today’s trip.

4 Intense Tango – Held on gamely to land a good prize at Musselburgh (1m6f, good) a week ago; evidently in good heart but only due a 4lb rise for that success and runs here under a 6lb penalty; new career-best performance needed to couple a double.

5 Deauville Dancer – Gave very good account when sixth in valuable handicap at Leopardstown (1m7f, good to yielding) for Sir Mark Prescott in October, his latest Flat start; subsequently did fairly well over hurdles for new stable but both runs in that sphere last month were disappointing and others here have much less to prove; tongue-tie/cheekpieces added.

6 Jacob Cats – Won twice in June (1m3f/1m5f) and also ran well when second at Sandown (1m6f, good to soft) last month; hard to knock on that evidence but he’s another 2lb higher today and this race represents a rise in class.

7 Hatsaway – 0-13 before joining Pat Phelan but been in superb form for new stable this season and completed a hat-trick with 5l success at Epsom (1m4f, good to soft) in June; 8lb higher in a stronger race here but the trip/ground should be okay and further progress possible.

8 Jack Bear – Displayed significant improvement to win over C&D (soft) by 5l on seasonal/stable debut in June and was a long way clear of the third when close second at Haydock (1m6f, soft) last month; could easily have more to offer but now needs to prove he’s fully effective on fast ground.

9 Roman Flight – Won a good-quality chase last month and is also a useful hurdler but been seen very infrequently on the Flat in recent years; current ability in this sphere hard to gauge and he’s probably best watched in a race this competitive.

10 Sellingallthetime – Now 1lb lower than when scoring at Catterick (1m4f, soft) in October; today’s faster ground won’t be a probably and there’s a decent chance the longer trip will suit but he hasn’t quite been firing on all cylinders this season and will need to be in peak form to win this.

11 Engage – Well-bred and lightly raced 3yo filly who has reached the frame in all three handicaps; met traffic when second at Newbury (1m5f, good to firm) on most recent occasion and might still have some improvement to come; commands respect.

12 Ravenous – Won readily at Windsor (1m3f, good to firm) last month and recent fourth in quite valuable event at Brighton (1m4f, good) was also a decent effort; can given another good account if the new trip suits here but modest 2-31 strike-rate reduces his appeal.

myracing Forecast Prices: 7/2 Engage, 5/1 Who Dares Wins, 7/1 Forgotten Hero, Cardinal Walter, 8/1 Intense Tango, Hatsaway, Jack Bear, 12/1 Jacob Cats, 16/1 Roman Flight, Ravenous, 20/1 Sellingallthetime, 25/1 Deauville Dancer
