IN SUMMARY: George William has some very smart form in the book, including a Listed third when last seen, but softer ground is a big question mark and preference is for GLOBAL APPLAUSE. He was a smart sprinter as a two-year-old and returned this season with a good third at Doncaster. His pedigree suggests a step up in distance can only help improve him and, with softer ground of little concern, he can gain a third career victory.
GEORGE WILLIAM – Smart sprinter for Richard Hannon who finished third at Listed level on his latest start at Newbury. The big question mark is the softer ground, which he’s avoided for his entire career, and Global Applause is favoured at the weights. Respected, but looks to be playing second fiddle.
GLOBAL APPLAUSE – Smart sprinter as a two-year-old for Ed Dunlop, finishing third at Group 2 level on his final two-year-old start. He returned this season with a good third at Doncaster and he’ll have needed that run, with softer ground fine. He should improve for this step up in trip and is the one to beat at these weights.
REPTON – Fifth in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood in July 2016, but he’s gone backwards since, well beaten on all of his three-year-old starts for Richard Hannon. Would be a hugely surprising winner with ground unlikely to suit.
BLACK BESS – Has been generally progressive this season for Jim Boyle, third in a Handicap at Goodwood in August before a blowout at Ascot when last seen. Best effort this season was at seven furlongs on soft so she couldn’t be discounted, but she has plenty to find with the front two.
SUMMER ICON – Last win came back in January and her strike rate is far from compelling, well beaten on all her runs since. This is another very tough ask for her and the softer ground is far from ideal, so she couldn’t be put forward.
