4.00pm Newcastle Tips & Betting Preview 23/06/2016

IN SUMMARY: HOME CUMMINS (7/1 Each Way) didn’t hit the ground running this season but shaped as though he might be returning to his peak when fourth at Musselburgh recently and looks very interesting now back on Tapeta, given the best performance of his 13-race career came winning winning his sole previous start on this surface off today’s mark. Alfred Hutchinson is fully exposed and the age of eight but was placed over 7f at York 12 days ago and, with today’s trip and surface combination arguably more suitable, he’s set to be involved again. Father Bertie ran better than his finishing position (ninth) suggests on his only previous Tapeta run and could make a bold bid from the front. Mont Ras earns good marks for consistency and probably won’t be far away.

1 Baraweez – Won the same valuable 7f handicap at the Galway festival in 2014 and 2015, and presumably has that race as a target again this year; began current campaign with two very respectable runs over 1m in Listed company at York but remains on a tough handicap mark and is untested on the AW.

2 Alfred Hutchinson – Disappointed on the middle of three starts for David O’Meara this season but his third at York (7f, good to soft) 12 days ago was a good effort and he’ll probably be better suited by today’s trip/surface; holds no secrets from the handicapper but can make his presence felt.

3 Si Senor – Gave very good account when midfield at Lingfield (1m) on AW Championship day in March but was probably slightly flattered by the way that race panned out; subsequent down-the-field finish on soft turf can be overlooked but he’s 8lb above his last winning mark and looks vulnerable.

4 Mont Ras – Four decent runs off today’s mark on Tapeta at Wolverhampton for new stable this year, the latest when third over 8.6f in April; can given another good account here but gained his last win back in February 2014 and the handicapper evidently has him where he wants him.

5 Mothers Finest – Yet to add to her 3yo maiden win in April 2015 and returned from absence with two moderate runs this spring but this month’s third at Doncaster (7f, good to firm) represented a good step back in the right direction; will be fine back over 1m; makes AW debut today.

6 Jacob Black – Sent off favourite for last month’s seasonal reappearance at Sandown but, having set a good pace, weakened quickly and finished last of 14; capable of much better, though, and is on a workable mark now; interesting to see whether he’s strong in the betting again before today’s AW debut.

7 Father Bertie – Only ninth of 12 after making the running on Tapeta debut at Wolverhampton (8.6f) in March but that performance was better than the bare result might suggest and he has another go on this surface after a decent effort in defeat at Ripon (1m, good to soft) the following month; dangerous if allowed to dominate from the front.

8 Altharoos – Three wins in 2015, the latest in big-field event at Thirsk (1m, good) off mark 2lb lower than today’s; absent since a couple of moderate efforts in the autumn, though, and will need to be fully revved up to have any chance on AW debut.

9 Home Cummins – Recorded what was arguably his career-best performance when winning his only previous Tapeta start, at Wolverhampton (8.6f, AW) off today’s mark in November; yet to hit top gear after three turf runs this season but his recent fourth at Musselburgh was very respectable; big player back on this surface.
