3 Outsiders Who Could Make You Rich in the Cesarewitch

We’ve the second-leg of the ‘Autumn Double’ this Saturday as another monster field line-up for the Dubai £500,000 Cesarewitch Stakes (Heritage Handicap) at Newmarket.

Being run over two-and-a-quarter-miles on the flat then it’s a race that attracts some of the leading National Hunt stables, and this is year is no different with the powerful Willie Mullins team, who are looking for their first win in this race, sending over a very strong hand.

However, with punters likely to latch onto the Mullins army there should be plenty of value further down the betting market………oh, and even though we saw a winning favourite in the race last year, it’s worth noting that since 2008 we’ve also had 66/1 (twice), 50/1 (twice), 25/1 and 16/1 returns, so this race has a habit of throwing up some big-priced winners.

Precious Ramotswe – Trainer John Gosden won the competitive Ebor Handicap for the first time earlier this season and he’ll be looking to break another duck in this race with this four-year-old. Okay, with Frankie Dettori booked to ride then there is every chance punters will latch onto this runner so, if you can, getting on early looks the way to go. This filly has been running well in Group races of late so the drop back into a handicap will be a lot easier, while with only eight career runs she should have more to offer. The big question mark is the trip as the furthest she’s gone to date is one-and-three quarter miles, but connections clearly feel she’s worth a crack over longer. Her proven flat speed would be a big asset if she does stay and her recent fifty-five day lay-off looks to be another plus as she’s gone well after a break in the past. Her age group have also won the last two runnings of this race and Frankie is also no stranger to winning this prize after getting the job done in 2011. Best Priced 33/1

Here And Now – This four-year-old is another of the slightly bigger-priced runners that looks interesting. Why? Well, mainly as he’s back up in trip after finding one-and-three quarter miles around the tight turns of Chester a bit too sharp last time out. Having said that, he still ran well to be a close fourth that day, and beaten less than two lengths, but prior to that outing he was an easy winner at York over two miles. Yes, that success came off a nine-pound lower mark, but this Ralph Beckett-trained runner travelled sweetly through that race and looked to have a lot more in-hand than the five-length official margin. With 9st 5lbs to carry then of the main trends like age, recent form, runs this season and trip he’s only really got his weight as a small negative, but in the last ten runnings we have seen two winners lump more than 9st 5lbs to victory, so it can be done. Uber Cool – Having won the 2006 Ebor with a 100/1 shot then trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam isn’t afraid to take on the big boys in these well-contested handicaps. She looks to have a fair sort to go to war with here too with Uber Cool having won three of his last four. Sandwiched in between his recent wins was a run in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and even though he found the two-mile, five-furlong trip stretching him he still did well to finish seventh of sixteen. This four-year-old returned from a three month break to win at Yarmouth last month so can be expected to have come on for that outing and a four-pound rise for that success looks fair. Okay, this is also a step back up in grade but jockey Ray Dawson, who claims a handy five pounds here, remains in the saddle and that allowance will be a big help in the closing stages. He’s also another horse that seems to have more of the main trends on his side than not and having won six of this eleven starts on the turf then it’s fair to say he knows how to get his head in front.
