IN SUMMARY: DARKANNA sets a strong form standard in this contest on her four length fifth to Clemmie in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. A repeat of that could see her rip this field to pieces. Never Back Down has not been seen since April, but his debut second to subsequent Group 3 scorer Sound And Silence reads well at this level, if he’s cherry ripe, he looks the main danger. Hindsight may well show that Flying Sparkle faced a tough task trying to give weight away at Yarmouth last time, she along with De Bruyne Horse should be in the mix for the places.
DE BRUYNE HORSE – Second top rated in the line-up but saddled with a penalty for his Listed win. This trip with cut in the ground is perfect for him, so despite being relatively exposed after ten starts, he still boasts an each way chance.
MOVE IT MOVE IT – Consistent thus far without being able to progress. He ran respectably on his handicap debut last time but that level of form is a long way short of what is required on this occasion, despite conditions to suit.
NEVER BACK DOWN – Runner-up to Group 3 winner Sound And Silence on his debut, he hasn’t been seen since the end of April. Unraced on anything bar good to firm but his dam handled cut, interesting player if he is ready after an absence.
RED ROMAN – Progressed well through the handicap ranks, producing a career best last time out. That was over seven furlongs, keeping on well to the line so this drop in trip isn’t an obvious plus. Handles soft ground but may need them to go to hard in front.
REGULATOR – Steadily progressive before flopping at this level last time out. That was a deeper contest but he shaped as if needing a seventh furlong so should find others a little sharper.
BILLY DYLAN – Both wins have come on good to soft ground but over shorter. His two runs at this six furlong trip have been comfortably his worst which leaves him with a huge question mark to overcome.
CHATBURN – A winner over five furlongs here back in May, he hasn’t stepped up on that effort in five subsequent runs. Good to soft suits and he beat Super Sprint winner Bengali Boys in that win so is not completely disregarded despite needing a considerable step forward.
PILKINGTON – A winner over five furlongs on his debut, he shaped as if in need of this trip when one paced at York last time. Should find a nursery before season end but looks an unlikely victor at Listed level.
SIMMY’S COPSHOP – The step back up to six furlongs is in his favour having been running on over five the last twice. He acts fine with cut in the ground but hasn’t really progressed since beating Havana Grey on debut. Needs more if he is to score here.
DARKANNA – Has kept smart company since breaking her duck in May. Was only beaten four lengths in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes by Clemmie last weekend. That form shines like a beacon at this level, very much the one to beat.
SILVER STARLIGHT – Picked up a handicap from 72 under these conditions in July. She has been mildly progressive this summer but her handicap form is a long way short of the principals on this occasion.
JEDI MASTER – Best of his form has come on genuinely soft ground, including when beaten less than a length in a competitive Glorious Goodwood nursery. Respectable effort at Doncaster last time but needs the heavens to open if he is to win.
JOHN KIRKUP – Rock solid handicapper with smart form with cut in the ground. All three of his wins have come at the minimum trip however, so despite an each way chance at the weights, he is passed over for win purposes.
MAYBRIDE – Two best efforts so far have both come on deep ground at Haydock. She has shown enough to suggest she is up to winning a nursery but on this ground, winning a Listed contest looks beyond her at present.
REQUINTO DAWN – Won the Brocklesby on the opening day of the turf season but has not got his head back in front since (first past the post last time but subsequently disqualified.) He has shown a consistent level of form but not at a high enough level for this.
LADY ANJORICA – Eight race maiden has run well enough in handicaps to think she can find a small race. Winning at Listed level however looks well beyond her on the form in the book so far.
GREEN FORTUNE – Already a dual winner, he shaped well enough in a Group 3 contest last time to think he’s well capable of paying his way. He failed to beat a rival home the one time he tried cut in the ground however, which sounds a warning note here.
INVIOLABLE SPIRIT – A winner at this track on debut, he has kept warm company since being gelded. He continues to fly too high here, tough to support with any confidence in such a deep field.
RUMSHAK – Shapes as if this step up in trip will see him in a better light, his best form so far on a similar surface to this over the stiff five furlongs at Carlisle. He has a stiff task on his hands at the weights however for a yard who are struggling for winners.
FLYING SPARKLE – Despatched of Hunni impressively on her debut, she narrowly failed to give a smart prospect weight on her second start. She needs more again if she is to hit the frame here, but with just two starts under her belt, she has the potential to do so.
FOXTROT LADY – Solid place form so far but she has struggled to find a change of gear in the closing stages. A half sister to Stewards Cup winner Dancing Star who came into her own as a three-year-old, she too may just require a little more time.
CROWNTHORPE – Progressed well since stepped up to seven furlongs and switched to handicap company. He shapes as if there is still more to come but he stays that seven furlong trip strongly so this step back is a question he needs to answer.
HUNNI – Off the mark on her handicap debut last time, her first encounter with soft ground. She has work to do to reverse previous form with Flying Sparkle despite being four pounds better off, looks to have a stiff task.
