The unusual distance of seven and a half furlongs awaits these juveniles on the predicted Good to Firm going and with prize money from first to fourth, only five of the nine runners will be leaving empty handed. Read on for our in-depth horse by horse race preview and selection for the 3.05pm from Beverly on Sunday afternoon.
IN SUMMARY: OUR LITTLE PONY (Each Way) looks attractively weighted down at the bottom of the handicap and looks outstanding each way value at the prices. She has won over course and distance and placed here as well which ticks all the boxes, and with Jamie Gormley taking seven pounds off her back, she is the one we want to be on this afternoon.
RUMSHAK – Top weight for the Michael Dods trained colt who won at Carlisle in July and has run well in both races since with second places at Thirsk and Musselburgh, and only beaten a nose last time out over this trip, running on strongly and only just failing to get up. This is his first run in a handicap off a rating of 83 which seems fair enough and is two pounds lower than his last race (surprisingly), and he seems sure to go close for a yard with three winners in the last two weeks.
REQUINTO DAWN – The son of Requinto won first time out at Doncaster over this trip and followed that with a respectable second at Musselburgh before a disappointing seventh saw him gelded in May but instead of the expected improvement he appears to have gone backwards. He may have possibly needed his first run back when a twenty-seven length nineteenth to Bengali Boys at Newbury but had no excuses last time when beaten six lengths by Angel Force at York and he needs to show signs of his old self before he can be supported.
JIVE LADY – Mark Johnston’s filly has won one of her seven starts but hit a top four placing in three others with a length and a quarter fourth to Milton Road at Chelmsford last time out over this trip. That was a Class Five contest and this is two grades higher so she will not find this easy but she is consistent for a stable with thirteen winners from their last seventy-four runners (18%) and runs off a pound less now from a favourable low draw.
BOW BELLES – Poorly drawn in the eight stall but she is an improving sort and may well be able to overcome that difficulty. Trained by Tim Easterby, the daughter of Kyllachy looked as if she would improve for her first run at Ripon and did exactly that next time out back at the same course when winning a Novice Stakes by a comfortable length and three-quarters. She did look a little one paced at Thirsk in third last time and was beaten over four lengths and she will need to find plenty more to get involved this afternoon.
ROUNDHAY PARK – The only entry with a win last time out after he beat Wensley by a neck over this course and distance in mid-July and open to even more improvement after just the three career starts. He was certainly value for an easier win after needing to be switched at the furlong pole and has been handicapped on his narrow victory and with any further improvement, he seems sure to threaten here.
SHAHEEN – Bought for 120,000 Guineas at the sales, the Al Shaqab owned son of Society Rock has paid back £5,062 of that so far courtesy of a Novice Stakes win at Redcar and three third places. This will be his first run at the minimum trip and he may well make all the running and play “catch me if you can” today under jockey Jason Hart and from his good draw he may well take some catching if he can slip the field early.
AQUADABRA – One win from nine starts for Mick Channon at bath in mid-July and may well be in the grip of the handicapper for now. She finished a below par last of six at Thirsk earlier this month when beaten seven and a quarter lengths with no visible excuses, and off just two pounds lower here looks to have her work cut out for a stable struggling for winners with just two from their last thirty-six runners (6%).
GANGLAND – Still a maiden after four starts but Richard Fahey’s grey gelding has finished second twice, at Ripon over five furlongs in June and over an added furlong at Redcar in June. Last time out he only managed a six and a half-length fifth to Milton Road at Nottingham over six furlongs in July when weakening a furlong out and he could do better dropped back to this trip. Sammy Jo Bell takes three pounds off his back and at his best they could well threaten the places.
OUR LITTLE PONY – Bottom weight for Lawrence Mullaney’s filly who is a daughter of Bated Breath and has won one of her seven starts so far over this course and distance, plus five places, two of them back at this course and distance again. She is certainly well weighted off just eight stone six and with her love for the track, she could well place at a big price.
