IN SUMMARY: An intriguing renewal pits experience against novices but at these weights BIG JIM (Each Way) is sorely tempting as an each way option. The Alex Hales trained eight-year-old runs off exactly the same rating as when winning a much better race as a novice at Ascot and had his issues last year in a season perhaps best written off, but if he is back to his best, he has a rock solid chance at a decent price and could well be in for a rewarding season.
CRIEVEHILL – Just the one race over fences so far for Nigel Twiston-Davies but rated higher than this over hurdles and potentially well-handicapped. Open to any amount of improvement with experience and the three-pound claim of Jamie Bargary is a bonus, but top weight may still be a bit too much at this stage of his chasing career.
ALLEE BLEUE – Another lightly raced chaser with a thirty-three length seventh over half a mile further at Uttoxeter when jumping sketchily before weakening. Trainer Philip Hobbs will have extensively schooled the seven-year-old since that run and there are no better jockeys than Richard Johnson but he does have a bit to find for the moment and may be best watched for now.
BIG JIM – Looked set for a good career when winning at Ascot in a decent Class Two Novice Chase in April 2016 but he has only had the one race since when a poor sixth at Haydock in December the same year and has presumably had his issues to be off the track since. Alex Hales yard are 0-14 in the last two weeks and others have to be higher on the shortlist at present.
GET RHYTHM – Punished by the handicapper for a neck win at Ffos Las on his chasing debut with an added five pounds this afternoon which seems harsh. He only just held on after making the running in faster going that day and could find his stamina tested on this softer surface, and his new rating could yet be his undoing today.
UN PROPHETE – Looked as if the run would do him the world of good when fourth to Deauville Dancer at Fakenham on his first run in eight months, leading three out before weakening and losing his place two out. Sure to strip fitter now and with Charlie Deutsch claiming three pounds he looks to have solid each-way chances.
RED DEVIL STAR – Let down by his jumping on his return to action at Worcester when beaten thirty-nine lengths over half a mile further in September, but an easy to back 12/1 shot who may well improve for his first race since April. Same handicap mark now as when winning in December at Ascot and is Suzy Smith can iron out his jumping issues he could run a big race here.
DE FAOITHESDREAM – No fitness issues after a third to Sizing Platinum at Newton Abbot in October but he was beaten a long way (fourteen and a half lengths) and has only been dropped a single pound today. The Evan Williams stable are going well with five winners from their last twenty-nine runners (17%), and early money suggests he won’t be far away here.
THE GREEN OGRE – Not seen in action since winning at Plumpton in February 2016 and hard to make a good case for after such a long time off the track. Local trainer Gary Moore likes to have winners here and off a rating just a pound higher he could yet prove to be well-handicapped but he must have had his issues and this looks a big ask first run back.
KEEL HAUL – Two wins from seventeen starts over fences at Wincanton and Cheltenham in far better races than this but thirteen losing starts in a row now and looks out of form. Sixth of nine at Worcester last month on his comeback run and will strip race fit now and undoubtedly well-weighted if trainer Henry Oliver can coax him back to anywhere near to his peak.
