8.15pm Newcastle Tips & Betting Preview 12/09/2017

A maximum field of 14 chase a first prize of just under £3,000 in this mile handicap. Our runner by runner preview and expert tip for the contest are below.

IN SUMMARY: TAILOR’S ROW has an excellent record on this Tapeta surface, placed in four of his five starts. He is five pounds lower than for any of those placed efforts which makes his 14/1 price look far bigger than it should be. Rock Warbler is another who enjoys his racing at Newcastle, three wins and two second place finishes from five starts here. He looks like the main danger to the selection, while Totally Magic and Angel’s Acclaim look well enough treated to fight out the frame places.

1 GERRY THE GLOVER – June 2015 was the last time this horse got his head in front, but he has enjoyed his visits to this track. A win and a second on the turf here, plus a pair of solid runs from three starts on the Tapeta, suggest that he needs consideration when he visits. He was beaten a head over a mile and a quarter here in July, dropped back in trip a strong pace would help his chance from two pounds higher.

2 ACRUX – Lightly raced, his sole win came on the Tapeta at Wolverhampton. He has only come close to that once since in six starts, on his debut for this yard at Doncaster. He rattled home over seven furlongs on that occasion, so the step back up in trip should suit, with the return to this surface another potential positive. Not easy to trust fully, but has enough to give him an each way chance on a going day.

3 AUSPICION – Outstayed Gerry The Glover when winning over ten furlongs at this track in July. That was his second win over that trip here this summer, suggesting that the drop back to a mile isn’t in his favour. He has run just one solid run from three starts since the latter win, looking like a little help from the handicapper is needed if he is to get his head back in front.

4 ROCK WARBLER – Far better horse on artificial surfaces, he runs from the same mark as when runner-up over this course and distance in January. His last three runs on turf are easily ignored, with the return to the Tapeta of huge interest. Five runs here have produced three wins and a pair of second place finishes. He has a big chance to extend that strong record in this contest.

5 YENSIR – Yet to score in 15 attempts but has been runner-up three times this season. Those runs have all been over further which puts into doubt the suitability of this test for him, with a pair of starts at this trip comfortably his two worst of the season. Third behind a pair of these over further at this track in July, he looks to have plenty to find to break his maiden tag.

6 TAILOR’S ROW – Placed in four of his five starts on Tapeta, he is five pounds lower than any of those runs here. He hasn’t got his head in front in 19 starts since winning on his debut at Chelmsford but, despite that, his record on this surface allows him another chance to prove that he is capable of better. He looks far too big in the market at 14/1 given his record on Tapeta so looks a cracking each way bet in this field.

7 RACEMAKER – Two of his three wins have come in selling grade, he makes his debut on an artificial surface here. His career best came when winning over this trip at Ripon in June but still three pounds higher than that win, he is going to need the switch in surfaces to have a hugely positive effect.

8 FIRE DIAMOND – Rattled off a four timer over the turn of the year, including at this track over seven furlongs. He has lost his form badly since, with a number of poor efforts at this trip. A first time visor is tried by connections, but he would have made more appeal over a furlong shorter, despite only being a pound above his last winning mark.

9 TOTALLY MAGIC – Placed six times in eight starts on turf in 2017, she should enjoy being back on Tapeta. She has a pair of wins and a second in her three career starts over this course and distance so it clearly suits her well. She is four pounds above her last winning mark, however the runner-up effort came off this same 65 so she boasts strong each way claims once more.

10 TABLE MANNERS – All 11 of her starts on the sand have come at this track, notching up three wins from them. She is five pounds higher than the last of those victories, wins that have all come at Class 6 level. She deserves respect given her course record, but she needs more if she is to notch up a fourth career success up to this class.

11 GUN CASE – Backed off the boards at Redcar last time, he was 25/1 the night before, sent off at just 6/1. The first three home there were drawn in one, two and four, so his berth in 12 may not have been the place to be. He has been dropped another couple of pounds, finding himself a pound below the mark he won from at this track last summer. He is no good thing to take advantage given he has been well seen off most of this season, but he needs each way consideration.

12 TAFTEESH – Well beaten the twice he has tried this trip, he is yet to convince that he is quite as good on this surface as he is on grass. He has had his share of problems down the years, feasibly treated by the handicapper now, but he would only be of any real interest if there is market support for a canny yard.

14 FOUR WISHES – Initially showed the benefits of being gelded when winning at Catterick in April. He has gone backwards since, fitted now with first-time blinkers on his Tapeta debut. Placed from this mark at Hamilton in June, he has the ability to challenge for a place, but the headgear is going to need to produce a significantly better display.

13 ANGEL’S ACCLAIM – Off the mark at the fifth attempt when she was fitted with first-time cheekpieces. That was a clear career best, travelling well into that Class 6 contest, before comfortably putting that race to bed. The step up in trip should see her in a better light. I the headgear works as well again, she should be a player given that she is open to much more improvement than the majority of these.
