Our Newbury race preview covers a range of horses, from a first time out 100,000 guineas purchase to a Sir Michael Stoute handicapper who is still a maiden after 5 starts. Read our betting tips to find which we think looks good value in this tight contest.

IN SUMMARY: Yangtze made good headway from off the pace when fourth in a hot handicap at Musselburgh earlier in the month and there is every chance we are yet to see the best of him but this might go to CORINTHIAN, who looked green and rather sluggish on his debut at Haydock but stayed on well to get his head in front in the closing stages and could be a lot better than that bare form suggests. Nodachi went very close on his handicap debut at Goodwood and is another with an appealing profile in this warm race.

1 Corinthian – Cost 100,000gns as a yearling and is out of an unraced half-sister to a French middle-distance Group 1 winner; needed plenty of stoking up on last month’s debut at Haydock (1m4f, good) but stayed on well in the closing stages to win narrowly; could easily have a lot more to offer now switched to a handicap.

2 Juste Pour Nous – Didn’t run badly when tenth at Royal Ascot (1m4f, soft) a fortnight ago and his respectable fifth at Musselburgh (1m4f, good to firm) two starts ago also came in a valuable event; in calmer waters here and recent 2lb drop helpful; can give a good account.

3 Magnum – Struggled in the Queen’s Vase when upped to 2m at Royal Ascot but that defeat shouldn’t be viewed harshly; still a maiden after six starts but was placed off today’s mark on handicap debut at Bath (1m2f, good to firm) last month and might fare better over today’s trip.

4 Skeaping – Posted sound effort when second at Windsor (8.3f, soft) recently but is yet to convince stamina-wise over middle-distance trips and strike-rate now stands at 0-10; others are much more interesting in a warm race.

5 Scarlet Dragon – Yet to add to last summer’s maiden win but suffered interference when fourth at Goodwood (1m1f, good) two starts ago and will find this easier then the 1m2f event he contested at Epsom on Derby Day; current handicap not beyond him if today’s step up in trip suits.

6 Nodachi – Displayed clear promise in the last two of his three maidens and went very close when second on this month’s handicap debut at Goodwood (1m4f, good); 3lb higher now and needs to prove he can cope with today’s slower ground but has plenty of scope to make further progress.

7 Yangtze – Out of a Park Hill winner and comes here after very respectable fourth in the Edinburgh Cup at Musselburgh (1m4f, good to firm) 26 days ago, his second handicap; possibly didn’t enjoy the run of the race that day and has a good chance here if suited by the slower ground.

myracing Forecast Prices: 13/8 Yangtze, 3/1 Corinthian, 4/1 Nodachi, 8/1 Skeaping, 12/1 Juste Pour Nous, Magnum, 20/1 Scarlet Dragon
