IN SUMMARY: Misterioso is probably not handicapped out of contention after going up 5lb for his come-from-behind success in a big field at Ascot 11 days ago, but it remains to be seen whether today’s race pans out in the same way and preference is for UNDER SIEGE, who ran well when fourth at Kempton on his final start for David Simcock, makes his debut for Stuart Williams on a workable mark and has recorded his best form over this C&D. Baileys Mirage has already won five times on the AW for Chris Dwyer this year and, after a lesser effort on turf last time, it’s possible his progress will resume back on this surface. Happy Call also gets a mention.

1 Misterioso – Only ever raced once on the AW (in 2015) but seemed suited by Polytrack on that occasion and returns to this surface after finishing well from off the pace to win big-field Ascot handicap (6f, good to firm) 11 days ago; can probably cope with today’s 5lb higher mark but may need others to set a strong gallop.

2 Baileys Mirage – Back from break with five wins (6f-7f) from six AW starts for new stable this spring; soared up the weights as a consequence but proved he can cope with current mark when third over C&D last month and presumably wasn’t suited by turf at Pontefract last time; can make a bold bid from the front and further progress certainly not out of the question.

3 Francisco – Still has low mileage and made very pleasing seasonal debut when runner-up in valuable contest at Newbury (6f, good to soft) in May but form has dipped since then; last of six over C&D two starts ago and finished in the ruck behind Misterioso at Ascot last time; needs to get career back on track.

4 Gambit – Pushed 8l clear to win 1m4f Wolverhampton maiden on seasonal debut in March but been well beaten in two 1m2f turf handicaps since then; has plenty of speed in his pedigree but it’s risky to assume that today’s significant drop in trip is the answer to his problems.

5 Happy Call – Won his maiden in first-time visor on AW debut at Lingfield (6f) in November and stayed on well to follow-up in handicap over that C&D when back in action in May; not seen to same effect when upped to 7f on good to soft turf on latest outing but could easily have more to offer back on Polytrack.

6 Welease Bwian – Three course wins over 5f this year and has also run well over that trip here recently; has won over 6f and there’s every chance he’ll given another good account today, but seems best over the minimum trip and has no margin for error off career-high mark.

7 Under Siege – Ended time with David Simcock with very respectable fourth in first-time cheekpieces at Kempton (6f, AW) a fortnight ago and is now 1lb lower than when close second over C&D on his seasonal debut in March; goes without cheekpieces on today’s debut for Stuart Williams but can make his presence felt if aided by added tongue-tie.

8 Monumental Man – Just about stays 6f but has gained all seven wins over 5f; has dropped quite a long way down the weights since last summer and stayed on well for third here (5f) eight days ago, but some of the 6f specialists make more appeal.
