IN SUMMARY: This looks a match between the Nicholls pair Old Guard and SAN BENEDETO, with ready preference for the latter. Although the former arrives here with race fitness, San Benedeto was a Grade 1 winning Novice over fences last season and he was formerly very useful over timber. He can go well fresh and Sam Twiston-Davies prefers him to Old Guard, so it’s a very straightforward and confident selection.

HINT OF MINT – Mostly progressive last term for Harry Fry, whose yard is in great form but this is his biggest test yet. He’ll need to be 100% fit on return to be featuring here and with his previous record in pattern company, he’s opposable.

OLD GUARD – Useful sort for Paul Nicholls who made a good return at Chepstow last week in the Silver Trophy, finishing seventh and clearly in need of the run. This is an easier race and off these terms, he is a key player under Harry Cobden.

OPTIMUS PRIME – Very unlucky two starts ago at Newbury before finishing second in the Swinton behind John Constable back in May. He’s progressive and his best days are to come, but he has plenty to find on these terms and should miss out.

RAYVIN BLACK – Front-runner who is hard to win with but will relish this small field where he can try to dominate. He can go well fresh, but he wasn’t in the best of heart when last seen and is a risky bet today.

SAN BENEDETO – High-class novice chaser last season for Paul Nicholls who was also useful over hurdles, running well in several graded/listed races. He’s the one to beat on ratings and Sam Twiston-Davies prefers him to Old Guard, so he should be very tough to beat.

MISS SPENT – Ran poorly on chasing debut at Huntingdon on her seasonal debut but she’s only rated 115 back over hurdles and faces an all but impossible task now pitched into these waters.
