The Sussex Stakes is always an explosive contest and is another chance for us to judge the best of the classic generation against some more established older rivals with our Sussex Stakes Tips. Since 2000, it’s been 10-7 to the three-year-olds and the antepost favourite comes from the younger generation in the form of Without Parole. He’s unbeaten in four career starts, building on two novice successes when winning a Listed contest at Sandown in May. It wasn’t a flashy success, but connections were adamant he’d improve for summer ground and they were proved right when he won the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot. He quickened clear impressively and was always holding a fast-finishing rival, hinting that we could expect even more from him in time. He can only improve for experience and if the ground has firm in the description, he’s an obvious contender.

The aforementioned rival who was closing up to him towards the line in the St James’s Palace was Aidan O’Brien’s Gutsav Klimt, who posted a clear career-best that day. There had been stamina doubts raised in previous starts, including when third in the Irish 2000 Guineas, but he brushed those aside at the Royal meeting. He flew home to be beaten only half a length, with his profile the one of a classic O’Brien horse, improving for every start. He’s ground versatile which is interesting to note given the downpours last year and it would be no surprise were he to have more to offer, not having much to find on the antepost favourite.

He’s had plenty of races nominated as potential targets, but it would certainly be interesting to see Saxon Warrior taking up his entry. He’s a two-time Group 1 winner at the mile distance, including on return when winning the 2000 Guineas in brilliant style. Things haven’t gone to plan the last twice since he’s been upped to 1m 4f, but he’s run with credit nonetheless. Dropping him back in distance would certainly be the right move, as he’s got more than enough speed to be winning at this trip. He handles any surface and given his Guineas romp, he’s one of the best the classic generation has to offer.

This season has been a revival for the likeable Lightning Spear, who has placed at the highest level on his last two starts. A course and distance scorer, he was only chinned late in the Lockinge on his return at Newbury in May and fought on bravely to finish second in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot last time. A return to this venue is an obvious plus, not beaten far in this race twelve months ago. He handles all types of ground and has strong each-way claims if putting his best foot forward.

Twice an impressive winner as a two-year-old, including at Group 3 level, Elarqam was a promising fourth in the 2000 Guineas on his return. Given that performance, it was hugely disappointing to see him floundering in the Irish equivalent in May. He was pushed along at halfway and made no impression when it mattered, with the firmer ground a possible excuse. Given his prior performances, he’s worth another chance after only four runs. He will need the ground to be good or softer, but if getting those conditions it would be no surprise were he to be involved at the finish.
